You've been a strange companion
Sixteen years we've been together,
I try hard not to be harsh but
This hold can't go on forever.
It's been an odd relationship,
A conclusion is hard to draw,
I still struggle to understand
Precisely what you do this for.
Yet despite the years of problems,
Perversely have you kept me here?
Offering a different outlet,
An alternative less severe?
So maybe you had your reasons,
I'm certain that it's not too late;
The time has come to make a change,
And I hope you'll cooperate.
I must be clear: please let me be,
I suppose thank you for your care,
I've no need for that protection:
The position's no longer there.
I'm in charge and I say what goes,
There's a new job for you to try:
Help keep me calm, content and whole –
But terms and conditions apply.
I know we can work together
With positive results this time,
It's our biggest turning point so far,
So here's the contract – will you sign?
