Quickly, before Charlie fell, I held my arms out to catch him. He fell comfortably in my arms.

"Thanks Aunty Kate," he gasped. I lowered my arms so he could crawl out.

"Mummy, you're like Superman!" Lucas exclaimed, running circles around me. I lifted him up and pretended to make him 'fly'. He giggled in excitement. I couldn't take it anymore. His laughter, his youth and his life. I put him on the ground and started bawling my eyes out.

"Mummy, what's wrong?" Lucas asked, as we walked into the living room and sat on the sofas. I wiped tears away and saw that Charlie was also on the verge of tears. I sat next to him and put my arm around his shoulder. With the same arm, I rubbed his up and down as he leaned on my shoulder.

"What's happening?" Lucas ran over to me. I placed him on my lap and put my chin on his head.

"Nothing, Lucas. I hurt my arm and Charlie hurt his leg," I lied swiftly, hiccupping in the middle a few times.

"Don't worry! It will get better!" Lucas smiled and turned around to hug me, his arms wrapping around my neck.  He let go and then hugged Charlie. Charlie and I smiled in unison. Suddenly, I heard the door open and Peggy’s loud voice filled the room.

“I’ve got the pills!” she exclaimed, in the hallway.

“What pills?” Charlie asked, exiting the room and going to his mother. They then entered the room; Peggy could be so careless sometimes. She bit her lip and Charlie immediately grabbed the bag out of her hands.

“Death pills?!” he exclaimed, throwing the box to the other side of the room. I stood up instantly, ushering Lucas out of the room.

“Lucas, why don’t you get changed into your pyjamas, honey?” I suggested. He nodded and grabbed his bag, taking it to a room so he could get changed.

“Charlie, calm down, please,” I said, softly.

“Did you have something to do with this too?” he questioned, pointing his finger at me.

“Yes, but it’s so we... so we die easily,” I whispered the last part, forcing the tears not to pour.

“Mum! Please! I don’t want to die! Mum I don’t want to die!” Charlie cried, hugging Peggy.

“I’m so sorry, Charlie. So sorry,” Peggy cried into Charlie’s hair, stroking it to calm him down. I sobbed too, knowing that Lucas was going to die with me.

“I don’t want to die, Mum. I’ll miss you so much! Please, stop global warming!” he sobbed.

“We’re going to die?” Lucas quizzed at the door of the living room. Simultaneously, all of our heads snapped in his direction, our eyes wide with tears dripping down our cheeks.

“No, darling. Charlie was just... rehearsing for his drama exam,” I whispered, a little too quickly.

“Then why is he crying?” Lucas asked, his lips trembling. I hurried over to him and crouched down to his level, pushing his hair back.

“Because he is an amazing actor,” I explained, forcing a smile on my face which was wet with tears.

“We are going to die, aren’t we, Mum?” Lucas gave everyone a quick glance before asking, “Will it hurt?”

“No, darling, it won’t hurt,” I gave up, wiping the tears from his face and pulling him into a hug. I knew that he was only four, but his mind was the same as a ten year old, so he would have found out sooner or later.
