Complaining about the lack of air conditioning, Rin wonders if he would even reach the top level of Exorcists. As Yukio notes that Rin will not go on certain missions, let alone do a simple errand like buying mineral water, he believes that Rin relies too much on his demonic powers and not on his head. Yukio leaves his room after receiving a call. Kuro, a cat sídhe familiar owned by Shiro, has gone berserk after hearing that his master has died. Yukio is summoned to deal with Kuro, and Rin tags along with him despite his objections. While confronting the familiar, Rin hears Kuro's cries of sadness as he refuses to believe his master is dead. It is shown that Kuro was a guardian deity to silkworm breeders, protecting them from rodents. However, after silkworm breeding died out, the shrine was demolished, turning Kuro into a demon. Kuro later disrupted a construction site, and Shiro was the only Exorcist able to calm him down without hurting him. Rin decides to face Kuro by himself with the same mentality, literally using his head to calm Kuro down, and the two become good friends. Yukio gives Kuro some silver vine sake,a present that Shiro left behind for safekeeping
