We had been driving for a little over 2 hours so far, and neither of us had said anything since Garret's outburst. "How did you die?" I aked softly.
Silence. "I'm sorry I shouldn't have asked." I stammered.
"Its ok" he laughed. "I was 19. Me and my buddy Tanner had just gotten to his summer house in Arizona, his cousins were there too, we started drinking with them. Things got a little out of hand. One of Tanner's cousins, Pete, wanted to go and pick up his girlfriend and bring her back here. She was only about 10 miles away from the house but even though I was drunk out of my mind-we all were, I knew that I couldn't let him drive." Garret was beginning to sound a bit angry.
"I tried to stop Pete-but he just kept walking out to his truck, I jumped him, and we started fighting, I felt something hard in his pocket. At he time I assumed it was cell phone. It wasn't." Now he is starting to look sad. I wanted to tell him to stop but I couldn't I wanted to hear how he died, and I don't think he would have heard me if I told him anyways.
"Pete got on top of me and went for his pocket. I was confused, but when he pulled the thing from his pocket. It was a knife. The others tried to pull him off me, but he thrashed his knife out and he caught Tanner's arm, he cut an arteiry. His arm was pumping out blood. His other cousins excpept one, Aiden, Pete's brother, took Tanner inside and called the police. Meanwhile, Aiden tried to get Pete off of me, but I yelled out for him to go inside so he wouldn't get hurt." At this point Garret was crying almost sobbing, but i don't think he noticed.
"He tried to protest but Pete yelled for him to go to." Garret paused for a moment. "Pete pulled his arm back and thrusted hard iinto my stomache, he did this about five more times. After that things got really fuzzy and I can't recall what happened next. All I know is that Tanner died that night too."
One of things I don't quite understand about The Light is, why does it let you remember how die? You forget your family, friends, even those dreams that you had over and over again when you were a child. Why make you remember the one thing you wish to forget. How you died.
"Do you remember what Tanner looks like? Or Pete or Aiden?" I asked curiously.
Garret thought for a mintue. "No." He scratched his head. "They are just blank faces, kind of like figures. If I saw Tanner, Aiden, or Pete Up Here, I probably woudn't know it was them."
We sat in silence for a few minutes. Then Garret spoke again, I was hoping he wouldn't.
"How did you die?"
