"Happy birthday to you! Happy birthtday to you, happy birthday Violaaaaaa, Happy birthday to you!"
"What time is it?" was the first of the many thoughts in my head that made it to my mouth. I had been woken up by Grayson and.. wait.. who was that?
"Mom?"
I hadn't even had a conversation with my mom in months. I doubted she even remembered my birthday, this had to all be Grayson's doing.
"hi honey! This really sweet boy showed up last night asking if you could stay home from school today, and I figured you deserved a nice birthday for once. So go have fun today! I'm off to work now" she walked out as soon as she finished saying that.
"she's so fake" I said to Grayson, rolling my eyes.
"I can tell, now get ready so we can leave. I'll be downstairs." he said with a smile then he walked out too. I put on a black v-neck shirt with lace on the ends, and my black lace shorts. I also wore thigh high rainbow socks and of course, my Doc Martins. I did my makeup the same as I usually do; black eyeliner winged, red lipstick, and my eyebrows filled with a dark brown. When I got downstairs Grayson was making pancakes..or attempting to.
"want some help with that?" I said holding back my laughter
"no..go away!! This is supposed to be a surprise!" he said, pushing me away.
I walked up to the stove, pushed him aside and made new pancakes to replace his burnt ones. He stood behind me and put his arms around my waist while I cooked. I tried not to squeal as he did this. I could feel him breathing on my neck and it sent chills down my spine, in a good way of course. After we ate he lead me to his car and wouldn't tell me where we were going, as usual. It was just like all of our previous drives together, except this time there was no music. Instead we just talked, which now that I think about it we never really do much of. He asked me about my past birthdays, my family, and just my life in general. I couldn't tell if I was saying too much or not enough..I didn't wanna be too open and scare him off, but he was just so easy to talk to. It's so weird, I've always been so nervous to talk to him. Ever since the day he brought over my alcohol everything has been so much easier. Thank god Luke has more of a life than Grayson.
"can I tell you a secret?" Grayson said, interrupting my train of thought.
"of course" I smiled weakly
"Luke wasn't busy that day..."
"what do you mean?" I acted confused, but really I knew exactly what he was talking about. A million thoughts were running through my head.
"the day I brought over your alcohol..the last time..I asked him if I could go. I ask him every time I go..I've been trying to work up the courage to talk to you for months. I've always though you were cool Vi."
I had no clue how to respond. Cool in what way? Has he had feelings for me too? Is he lying? Is he as nervous right now as I am?
"same for me..well not the alcohol part aha. But I've always wanted to talk to you. I'm glad you decided to actually have a conversation with me." I think I was holding back hyperventilation. This was officially the best birthday ever.
I had fallen asleep in Grayson's car (due to my lack of sleep he had been causing) and he woke me up right after stopping the car, I assume. I didn't even bother to ask where we were, although I wasn't awake enough to notice my surroundings, I knew he wouldn't tell me. I followed him out of the car and into a small building. I looked at him confused for a second because I had no idea where we were.
"you mentioned before that you love cafes, and your mom told me that you're vegan..so we're at a vegan cafe!" He continued before I had a chance to respond "don't worry though, this isn't all we're doing today"
"worrying about this being all we're doing is the last thing on my mind" I reassured him.
After the cafe we went to a book store (where I got a book of Edgar Allan Poe poems and a Vincent Van Gogh biography), an arcade, and back to my house. His plan to end the very long day was to watch Tim Burton movies and eat junk food. How did he know me so well?
"today was amazing, I can't thank you enough"
"you don't have to thank me. It's your birthday." he smiled so brightly. "oh and, one last thing" he said handing me a small box in pink wrapping paper
"nonono, you've done enough today!" I said feeling very guilty
"it's your birthday!" he insisted, handing me the box more forcefully now.
I took it and started to unwrap it. Inside was a candle called "passion fruit", it smelled amazing! I pulled Grayson into a tight hug. After at least two minutes of our bodies being pressed together, he pulled away and pressed his lips to mine. My heart stopped then started beating so hard that it fell to my stomach. He pulled away blushing and smiling and shyly asked
"should I have done that?" I nodded and pressed my lips back to his.
For the rest of the night we cuddled; I fell asleep with my head on his chest and woke up the same way. Did I mention that this was the best birthday ever?
