Chapter One
Watching television, I couldn't concentrate. Anything that came from the TV's speakers was barely audible, showing only the characters' moving lips. All I could hear were my parent's conversation through the thin walls of my room. I tried to figure out what they were talking about without eavesdropping into it too much. The words I picked up were- leave, away, marriage, sick, stupid, Ariel. They caught my full attention when I heard my name.
"If you make this decision, then I will-"I heard my mom say but get interrupted.
"We're only doing what's best for her and I can't change anything. Sorry, but it's just the way it is. He is a nice man and fit for Ariel, no questions asked," my dad, George, stated sternly. What are they talking about?
"But-"Again, she was cut off.
"Aeva, I will not tolerate 'what if's' and 'buts' whatsoever. She will marry Sebastian when she turns twenty, and that's FINAL." Dad put so much pressure into his last word and that's when my mother stopped talking for sure. She must have looked frightened; I couldn't imagine my father's face as he said that. He rarely gets angry, so this must be very serious.
Realization dawned upon me when my dad’s words sunk in. 'She will marry Sebastian.’ My eyes widened and my jaw dropped. What? I'm going to marry someone I don't even know? Better yet… Why didn’t I ever hear them mentioning it until now? I felt so angry all of a sudden. How long have they kept this from me?
I slammed my bedroom door open, not caring if it breaks. Nothing mattered at the moment except for the damn marriage my father is forcing me into. I stomped my way into the small and cozy living room where both my parents stood, eyes widening. It won't be cozy for long, I thought angrily.
"WHAT!?" I yelled and both my parents were startled from my sudden outburst. My mom pointedly glanced at my dad and I looked at him. "I'm getting... married?" I whispered, but loud enough for both of my parents to hear. "WHY!? What the fuck!"
"Language,” father scolds, but I don’t give a flying…
My dad regained his posture, keeping up his straight face and clearing his throat. He wasn't expecting me to pop out of my room, not that I would tell him anytime soon. "Well yes, Ariel. There is no way am I breaking the damn contract, so you will marry Sebastian when you turn twenty, and whether you like it or not, you must because we need the money," he said as if it was nothing, but it was like my whole life crash landed right before me. I knew he was only in this for the money.
"Who the hell is Sebastian? How long have you been keeping this from me?" My voice shook in anger. I was angry. In fact, that was the understatement of the century. I felt like I could kill someone and throw them into the Bermuda Triangle, not caring what would happen afterwards. I shot a death glare at my dad; he looked like he was about to flinch but held himself back from looking weak. His eyes showed some sort of regret and forgiveness, but it was quickly gone before I could say that was a fact.
