I climb the stairs to Tris's apartment. I reach back into my pocket and feel the black felt box against my fingers. I'm going to propose to her tonight. We've been together for a year, it's not long but I love her, I always will. No matter what.

We met at my twenty-second birthday party. She was Christina's "plus one" and we just hit it off. She was twenty at the time so it didn't really work when I tried to buy her a drink.

I reach the top and and push the door open. I smile but that quickly fades when I see Uriah and Tris by the door. Tris looks stressed, Uriah looks at her with his hands on her shoulders. I know Uriah has feelings for her but I never thought much of it, until now.

Tears start streaming down Tris's face and Uriah pulls her into a hug. I would move and confront them but I can't, I just stay in my place. They don't even notice me or the bright colored flowers in my hand.

After a few seconds they pull away and Uriah's hands are on her cheeks wiping away her tears. All of a sudden my world comes crashing down. He presses his lips to hers. She just stands there with her eyes closed and her arms at her sides. She doesn't look shocked or happy, just relaxed. Her lips don't move but she doesn't stop him.

Uriah was my friend and he kissed my girl, my Tris. My eyes are kept on them for a second more them I drop the flowers. That seems to grab their attention.

Tris looks at the flowers then me, tears come back to her eyes. "Tobias..." I just shake my head slightly. She slips out of Uriah's grasp and walks towards me. I open the door and walk–run–down the stairs.

"Tobias. Please. I didn't mean for that to happen. I didn't even want that," she says running down the stairs with me.

Once I get outside I feel the cold air creeps on my face. I breathe out, I can see my breath. I turn around and see Tris crying. She has her jacket on so I assume she just got home when I saw them.

She steps towards me. "Tobias..." She steps closer. "Say something."

"You want me to say something? Why didn't you stop him? I saw him kiss you, you did nothing but stand there. That tells me that before you didn't want that but when he did it you did want that. So did you like kissing Uriah?" I look back and forth between her eyes, looking for something.

"It was nothing. Your mine and there is nobody else," she says. She's looking right in my eyes and I know she's lying.

"You didn't answer my question Tris." I raise my voice. "Did you want that? If I didn't show up would you kiss back or wait for him to pull back."

"I'm sorry," she says quietly.

"Sorry?" Now I'm yelling and when I say that she jumps frightened. "Sorry isn't going to fix what happened, Tris I knew he had feelings for you but I didn't worry about it because I knew something like that would never happen."

She steps closer and tries to touch my cheek but I turn away. She breathes in, she's hurt.

"But I guess I was wrong," I say stepping back. "You know we can't be friends, I guess this is how it ends."

She shakes her head. "No, no. Tobias, please forgive me. I love you, I love you. Please." I feel tears at the back of my eyes. I've only cried once in front of Tris, when it was my dad's funeral.

"See, I would fall for that but I know that he would do this again and you would do the same thing. We would just be repeating days, it's all the same," I say pulling the box out of my pocket. "Here." I put it in her hand, she frowns slightly at first but realizes what it is. "If I have it, it would just be a bad memory."

I walk away not looking back. When I get to my car I scream in frustration, pounding on my steering wheel.

It's crazy how one second can change your life in the worst way possible.
