The wind slowed as five young boys lay on the paved road. Not one of them moved at all. The cold night’s breeze ruffled the blonde boy’s hair as the blood trickled down the side of his face. In the distance was the sound of traffic. Car horns were honking..., trucks flying down the highway. It was a busy night in London and everyone had a place to go; even the five boys that hadn’t moved from the rough gravel on the road, although tonight they wouldn’t complete their journey and arrive at their destination.
One boy, the second youngest of the group, groaned in pain as he came to. He fluttered his eyes open, his head throbbing from the impact he had made to the ground. Niall sat up, hearing the sounds of shattered glass moving under his body. He wasn’t sure what he was to expect when he awoke, but this – of all things – was not one of them. Blood dripped down his friends’ faces, cuts and bruises painting their canvas-like skin. This wasn’t going to sink in anytime soon, it felt surreal to the young boy that had only gone out for a few drinks with his band mates.
“L-Louis?” He whimpered, his voice sounding somewhat like a young child’s, “Louis wake up.” Niall’s hand rested on Louis’ shoulder, shaking him like a rag doll. Louis’ could have been mistaken for being asleep, peaceful, unharmed. But this sleep was different; it was a sleep that the young boy from Doncaster would never awaken from. As he rolled onto his side, Louis’ eyes bored into Niall. The hint of life wasn’t there anymore. He was gone. It was too late to save him.
“No… Louis…” Niall sniffled, tears building up in his eyes, “Louis you can’t do this!”
The blonde looked around, suddenly noticing the other boys that surrounded him. He crawled over to the youngest, slowly running his hand down his arm. Niall was working up the courage to turn him over, afraid he would see the horror and desperation that he had seen in Louis. When Harry was rolled over, his eyes were closed shut, ever so lightly. A bruise was fixed on his cheek, small cuts underneath his left eye. As Niall leant over, his hand rested in something soft, something wet. As he looked down he noticed the split in Harry’s stomach, blood staining the white shirt that he loved so much.
“Harry…” Niall’s voice was almost inaudible, filled with disbelief and fear, “Please be alive Harry.”
Niall pleaded with the curly-haired boy. Despite his efforts, however, Harry didn’t even breathe. Deep down Niall knew that there wasn’t much hope for the two boys that remained, but he wanted to try. He needed to try.
“Liam? Zayn?” Niall whispered, vigorously shaking both, “You’re okay, you’re both alive. Just tell me you’re okay!” Niall’s voice was now demanding yet still shaky.
He was alone now. The only noise was the traffic in the distance.
“Wake up boys.” He breathed, the tears mixing with the blood and sweat on his cheeks, “I need you.”
Niall sat with his back to his five best friends, his knees tight against his chest as he whimpered and sobbed.
“Niall, get back over here lad!” Liam laughed, making an ‘oof’ sound soon after, “You’re gonna miss out!”
Niall turned back around, seeing nothing but his lifeless friends. He swivelled his body back to face the city’s illuminated outline.
“Oi Irish!” Louis sat in front of Niall and clapped his hands, “Would you pay attention?”
Niall blinked in disbelief, his eyes wide. Surely this wasn’t real! He turned to face his friends which were all standing on the side of the road. Harry was stretching as Liam yawned. Zayn tapped his foot on the floor as Louis ran back to join them. They all turned, about to walk towards where the sun was beginning to rise from.
“Where are you going?” Niall whispered, his voice broken and confused.
All four of them turned around and smiled warmly, “We’re going to be forever young.”
