Roses

I was looking down at my hands as I sat in a bench at the park. Erica had dropped me off and told me to call her when I wanted to go home. I had gotten here a bit early because I was nervous. What was he going to say? Would it be enough for me to take him back?

I sighed and held my face in my hands. Why had this become so complicated? At this time last year, I hated Brian's guts, and now I was heartbroken waiting for him on a park bench.

I took my hands off my face and leaned back. I watched the brown, yellow and red leaves fall from the trees. It was mid October and the coolness of Autumn was setting in.

A bouquet of red and white roses appeared in front of me.

"Hey." I heard from behind me. I took the flowers in my hands and Brian walked to stand in front of me. The sweet scent of the roses filled my nose and soothed me.

"Flowers?" I asked him. They were sweet and a nice gift but I needed to know that he wasn't planning on winning me over with just flowers. He sighed.

"I know, they're not enough. I fucked up."

"You did." I said and set the bouquet on my lap. He kneeled in front of me and took my hands in his. His eyes looked at mine and his look touched my heart.

"I'm sorry Michaela. You know I wasn't the one that kissed her. But I should've stopped her. I should've told her I had you. Then I should've looked for you and explained what happened. But instead I assumed you didn't know and thought I should keep it that way." I didn't say anything. "You gotta give me another chance, though. And if you do, I promise I'll tell you if anything like this happens again. I just got you to admit your feelings for me. I can't have you hating my guts again."

I looked at him and his eyes showed honesty. "Please." he whispered.

"I'm a sucker for flowers, especially roses, you know." I said and smiled slightly.

He chuckled. "It's a good thing I know you." he said.

"I'll give you another chance." I said.

"Thank you." he said.

He took my hands and kissed them. Then he held both of them with one hand while his other hand caressed my cheek. He leaned in and softly kissed me. My eyes fluttered closed while I kissed him back. One of my hands found his hair and held him closer to me. We leaned away and regained our breath.

"I'll take you home," Brian said, "C'mon."

We got up and he took one of my hands in his while I held the bouquet of flowers with the other. He intertwined his fingers with mine and brought my hand up to his lips and kissed it.

"Will you go on a date with me?" he asked me. "I was thinking dinner tomorrow night."

I smiled and blushed. "Of course." I said.

He smiled and kissed my cheek.

"Thank you." he said.

I opened the house door and Brian walked in after me.

"Micky?" Matt called.

"Yea, it's me." I called back.

I walked to the kitchen and Brian followed me. I opened the cupboard to search for a vase for the flowers and Brian leaned on the counter.

"I was wondering where you were at." Matt said. He entered the kitchen and looked at Brian. "Hey Brian." he said.

"Hey Matt." he replied.

I filled the vase with water and put it on the counter next to Brian.

"I was with Erica and Charlie." I said. I dropped the flowers in the water and looked at my brother.

He rose an eyebrow. "Who gave you the flowers?" he asked.

I froze. Shit. Brian and I hadn't talked about telling Matt. I looked at Brian and he looked back at me.

"I uhm..." I looked down at my hands.

"I gave them to her." Brian said. Matt and I looked at him. He had a hand on the back of his neck and looked at Matt nervously.

"Really?" Matt asked and crossed his arms over his chest.

"Yea." I said.

"I sort of asked her out." Brian explained.

"And you said yes?" Matt asked me. I nodded.

A silence lingered in the room. Matt cleared his throat.

"Well that was unexpected but...I'm happy for you two. It's about time you grew the balls to ask her." Matt said and playfully shoved Brian.

Brian laughed and shoved him back. "Yea, I know." he said and looked at me with sweet eyes.

"And look sis," Matt said, "I know Brian won't hurt you. What he feels for you is sincere and I'm glad that you feel the sane way about him."

He took me in for a hug and I buried my face in his chest. We pulled apart and he kept an arm around my shoulders.

"Like I said, I know you won't hurt her," Matt told Brian, "but if you do, you'll have to regrow some balls."

I laughed and Brian grinned. "I won't hurt her. I promise."
