Chapter 4

28 days before graduation...

After the whole cutting classes thing, we went back to our usual lives. Today, I'd decided to get to school a little later than usual.

It was like my luck decided to turn bad as I started my day. My car was dented, probably the kid across the street was responsible for this. I sighed and pressed the car remote for it to unlock, it made it's usual beeping sound to tell me it's unlocked.

I drove slowly to school, when I got out of my car, I slipped on a puddle left by last night's rain. I stood up to dust myself off.

Skipping class was probably a dumb idea considering we had new topics that I had no clue about.

During lunch, I sat down beside Colby but he inched farther from me until he was closely sitting beside Aaliyah who didn't seem to mind. He still looked down. Maybe it was because of yesterday's dare.

I gathered up my courage and scoot closer beside him, "Uh, hey." I said.

He looked at me and nodded.

"Are you okay?" I asked him.

He nodded again but this time he didn't bother even glancing at me.

I felt guilty for getting him in this way. "You seem down," I said quietly, "is there something bothering you?"

"It's nothing." He murmured and took a bite out of his burger.

"Look if it's about the dare, I'm sorry."

"No. Don't be, you were just being honest."

"I just felt that," I paused, thinking of coming clean, "I felt that it would be easier to kiss Nash."

"Obviously because you like him." He took a sip of water.

"It's not really like that, I just think that-" I got cut off.

"Sorry I'm late guys!" Nash said an took a seat beside me.

Colby got up, "I'm not really hungry anymore, I'll be heading to class early."

We were all shocked by his action, Aaliyah held on to his wrist to stop him from leaving but he pulled away and kept walking.

Gosh, please let him talk to me, it's already difficult enough.

For a moment, all of us just exchanged awkward looks. But then we all went back to talking and chatting. I just kept my head down and pretended to listen when all I was thinking of was if Colby was okay.

I guess every subject passed quickly until biology class. It was the last period and Mr. Michaelis was still nowhere to be found.

"Guys, you do know it's in the school rule book that we're allowed to leave the class if he isn't here in 15 minutes." Jeff, the guy at the back of the class said.

"Then that means 3 minutes more and we're outta here." Elise said.

While people were yelling, cheering, chatting, I kept my head down and started doodling around on my notebook.

Chloe, a girl from the cheering squad appeared beside me along with Jane. "So I heard you and Grier were a thing?" Chloe said, leaning in closer to me.

I wanted to keep quiet but they'd only pick on me more, "Which one?" I asked innocently. For all I know, maybe she was referring to Hayes.

"Don't act so dumb, you know who I'm talking about." She said.

"Well if Nash and I were a thing, why would you care?"

"Because he's mine." She said.

"Last time I checked, he was a human, not a pet for you to keep and declare as yours." I replied.

"Listen," she pulled me by my hair and brought her lips closer to my ear, "Nash is mine, if you get any closer than you already are to him, I swear I will make your last days of high school a living hell."

"Bitch, get your hands off of me," I said as I pulled her hand away from me.

"You don't know who you're messing with." She said and pushed my head against the biology table.

I tried breaking free but Jane held me in place, I heard cheering as everyone got up and filed out the room, I pushed them off with all the strength I had and ended up getting my face scratched by one of their french-tipped nails.

I was never the weak one, but I just got so pissed off that I just started crying. I ran out as quick as I could and made a sprint to my locker, getting my stuff just in time to make a quick escape.

Pressing the car unlock button on the tiny remote, I quickly entered the back seat and sank down into the seat, crying quietly.

"Um," someone said, "hi?"

I looked up and saw Colby sitting beside me. "What are you doing in my car?" I asked.

"I was kinf of about to ask you the same question." He said.

I looked around and realized this is definitely not my car. "I'm so sorry!" I said in embarrassment as I opened the door, I was about to leave when he stopped me.

"It's alright, come back." I tensed up a bit when he spoke.

I froze but closed the door. I couldn't face him. I hid my face in my hands again and tried to stop crying.

"Hey, don't cry. What happened?"

"I just got into an," I choked slightly on my words, "I was being picked on and I guess I'm not very used to being threatened."

"Look, if it makes you feel better, wanna go on a ride? Maybe tell me more about what happened?" He said.

He was being kind and that's more words than he's spoken to me since lunch. I nodded and he got in the driver's seat, he asked me to transfer to the passenger's side so I did. Colby started the car and we drove off.
