A spray of sand and sawdust. The hessian bag exploded at contact with the blade, and scraps of the material scattered to the floor. With a cry of frustration, Arriway swung the broadsword again, at the other sack next to him, and it met the same fate as the remains of its companion on the floor. What were they doing with the Princess? The whole castle in Idia would be awake now, realising that Netis was gone. Arriway could picture the King and Queen now, confused and upset, sending out search parties. He knew they couldn't find her while she was here. Ectilea had put a heavy glamour around the whole cave.
He needed to get the Princess out, and onto their quest.
Arriway sheathed his sword in the large scabbard over his back, and turned from the small training room.
Ectilea Cave was a labyrinth of ragged rock tunnels. Many of them lay in wait with hidden traps for any foolish trespassers who dared to challenge them. Arriway picked up a quick pace and let himself melt into the shadows.
He was spinning. Spinning through nothingness, down, down, down, to the heart of the cave. The doorway ahead shimmered with the maegial barriers, but Arriway knew the trick; it was a one-way trip. You could walk through the barrier as if it wasn't there, into the cavern, but when you tried to get back through, there might as well have been a solid wall of rock in the way. Beyond the threshold, Arriway watched the Prophetess Ectilea talking to Princess Netis.
He burst through.
