*Melinda's POV*
Ugh, this is so boring! Well, I knew it would be but this is just stupid. I've been standing at this damned crosswalk for 10 minutes, why the hell is the traffic so busy tonight?!
I sigh, my irritation growing by the second. There's like three people standing with me, none of them I recognize.
One of them is a guy, pretty tall with dark brown hair and brown eyes with a full on beard. The guy couldn't be older than twenty. Another was a shorter guy with tan skin and brown eyes and a too obviously dyed Go-T and white hair, though he could be around thirty something. The last is a boy around my age, I can only assume that he's the short guy's son because of the resemblance. His hair is short and black and compliments his lovely dark, tanned skin and his eyes are big and brown - almost black - and the first thing I notice is that he's very quietly humming to himself.
I can't help but listen and recognize the song 'Just the Way You Are'.
"You like that song too, huh?" The words are out of my mouth before I can stop them.
The boy stops humming and gives me a quick nod. His face remains expressionless and he turns back to the crosswalk.
"S-So what's your name?" I ask. Why the hell am I shaking? And why's my heart beating so fast?
"Kody," He replies. "Yours?" His voice is deep and smooth.
"Melinda." Kody... That names sounds awfully familiar...
I shake my thoughts away and return my attention to the rather... attractive boy. The two men are ignoring our conversation in favour of their own and I briefly caught their names; the tall one is Arian and the short one Rand.
Kody stares at me expectantly, though he looks a tad annoyed that I interrupted his humming. Well, can't turn back now!
"I've never seen you around before, you new?" I ask.
Kody nods. "I used to go to Cherokee and then I moved to Evant. Never been here. My dad and his friend had business here or something at the school."
I nod again, I used to go to Cherokee myself until Thurston moved us.
Wait a minute.
Wait a freaking minute.
"You wouldn't happen to be Kody Canyon, would you?"
Kody looks surprised for a moment before he nods again. "How'd you know?"
"Do you seriously not remember your childhood friend Melinda Troy?" I gasp in dramatic shock and give him a pouty face. His eyes widen and he blinks about forty times before he speaks again. "Melinda?"
"Damn straight!"
Kody then gives me the biggest grin I've ever seen on him before.
*Flashback*
"Come on, Kody! You're so slow!" I tease as I run through the yard, giggling like a maniac.
Kody meanwhile is desperately trying to catch up, his breathing quick.
I stop and look behind me and I laugh. "You're not already tired from a little race, are you?"
Kody glares at me. "No! I just twisted my ankle!" He scowls.
I giggle. "No need to get all worked up."
Kody snorts and takes in deep breaths.
Nearby, Kody's dad Rand whistles at us. "Hey Kody, it's time to come in. Tell Melinda it's time to go home!" He shouts.
Kody looks up at me and smiles. "I'll see you tomorrow, Mel!" He says and runs into the house.
I smile but when he finally disappeared into his house it fades. I don't want to go home. Mom and dad are mean to mw whenever I come back, of course he doesn't know about it though. Nobody does.
I sigh and walk across the street, my head down and twiddling my thumbs.
*Flashback End*
My joyful smile fades and I look up at the still grinning Kody.
"Why did you leave that day?" I ask quietly.
He tilts his head. "Hmm?"
"That day. When we were 10, you left. You had said you would see me tomorrow, but you just left." I glare at him. "You didn't tell me."
He looks guilty for a second. "I know. It was a last second move for me, too. I didn't get the chance to say goodbye."
I search his face for the lie I had thought was coming and when I don't find anything I smile.
"Well, I'll be the first to say 'hello' after six long years."
