(Unedited)

I remember that day so vividly.

•Flashback•

The stench of sweat, stale booze, cigarettes, and a hint of desperation lingered in the air as I entered the small dive bar situated at the corner of the street outside of campus. Being a Tuesday night, not many students came to the bar, although there are still a handful of customers present.

"One whiskey soda, please" I ordered.

With a nod of the head, the bartender began preparing my order. While patiently waiting for my drink, I start to observe my surroundings. In one corner of the bar stood a couple joined by the lips, hungrily trying to get a taste of one another. Swiftly, I turned my head, not wanting to witness another second of the couple's make out session. In the opposite corner are various pool tables occupied by a group of what appears to be college students hollering curse words at each other. The scene alone made me shake my head as a smile etched onto my face.

And that's when I saw him.

It was as if time has suddenly stood still. He radiates confidence; from the way he stands, to the words spilling out of his mouth. Every movement enthralled those around him, and as he stands in the middle of the crowd, all I could see is him. I must have been staring for quite a while, for his eyes met mine. Not knowing what to do, I held eye contact for what felt like eternity, until the pressure became too much and I averted my eyes.
For the rest of the night, I sat on the same barstool, drinks after drinks, carefully observing this stranger I wish to befriend.
Yet, who am I to be worthy enough to be granted with his presence? I am not pretty, nor am I sociable. The only decent quality I posses is my knowledge. I am merely a girl his eyes will pass over, as he is surrounded by those much elegant than I. Wallowing in my self-pity, I failed to notice the presence of none other than the same boy I've been pining over all night.

"Refill on the beers, please"

That's when I snapped my head up. His raspy voice sang it's way into my ears, deeper than I would have ever imagined. He stood roughly 6 feet tall, his body leaner than those around him. Waiting for his refills, he sat down  next to me.

"Don't you know that it's dangerous for someone as beautiful as you to be in a bar alone, especially this late at night?" He slurred as he turned his body towards me.

Finally being able to study his features, I noticed the light freckles scattered throughout his nose and cheeks, something I could not see from a distant. His light green eyes bore into mine and suddenly, I had lost all abilities to speak.
That was all it took for him to steal my heart.
This is the beginning of my tragic unrequited love.
