A New Beginning

Chapter 2

Once we landed more officers greeted us. 

"Please gather in the meeting hall in ten minutes for evaluation and the laws." An officer barked orders. We just nodded and followed an officer to the meeting hall. Stations were set up for us to visit and learn about this foreign town-country. If that's what you could call it. I followed my family up to the first station. Will's family followed behind us.

"Hello everyone. I'm officer Waters. But you are more than welcome to call me Chase." The officer smiled. I liked him he seemed friendly. He was around my age maybe a few years older. Considering the guys here he was attractive. "I'm here to check everyone for any sickness. Who wants to be first?" Mom stepped up first. She received an okay and proceded to the next station. Next was Katherine, the officer seemed to like Katherine a lot. He teased her like her own big brother would. I went after Katherine, and Tony went after me. The friendly officer told me that I was healthy, and pretty before allowing me to proceed. Tony was checked and the officer told him to step aside. Mom stopped us to wait for Tony, but another offier pushed us to move on. I was confused.

"No. We are going to wait on him" I pointed to Tony. "we are a family." The officer grunted in response, and called Officer Waters over. 

"Explain, boy." He ordered Officer Waters. Officer Waters or Chase, whatever I wanna call him looked uncomfortable. 

"I'm sorry mam. But your husband could be sick. We'll send him to the infirmary for further tests. It could be a simple cold." Chase explained but by his eyes I could see things were more than a 'simple' cold. I glared at him for not being blunt with the truth. He gave me a weak smile, gave me a simple head nod, and walked back to his job. 

"Alright, your husband is being escourted to the hospital. But as for you and you family, you still need to carry on with the stations." The rude officer explained. My family along with Will's healthy family followed the officer. "I am here to explain our rules. Here is how everything works. When you turn 17 you are given the name of your marriage partner. They have been paired by genectics, so hopefully every system will be immune to illness. Also, you will be given housing arrangments. You will be assigned a house with your partner. The government will give you a maximum and minimal number of kids you may have. We have job options and no one over the age of 18 will be jobless. Any questions?" The officer looked around for any hands. "Okay then. Please proceed to the next station." He gestured to a table to which we walked over to.

"I will be giving out houses. Now to stay here isn't free. You must work daily except for Sundays and Saturdays." The man smiled. He called my family's name and gave us our address. Then he gave Will's family theirs. 

"What number is your house?" Will walked up to me and asked. I peeked over my mom's shoulder to see our number.

"28. What about you?"

"30. It looks like a house is between us." Will stated. He almost looked somewhat devasted. I couldn't really tell. I'd seen and felt so many emotions within the past months, I could not decipher them anymore. I almost replied, but the officer interrupted me.

"Now on to marriage partners, if you're already married this does not concern you." The rude officer stated. "Will Butler you will be matched with Shelby McAberthy. She is from what was New Jersey. Now along to you." he pointed at me. "Your match is Chase Waters. You will be acquainted with them by tomorrow. By the end of the year, you shall be ready to marry and start a family. Any questions? Okay good. At the end of this month, you will be given a census. Also the Governor shall visit you." He finished and we were led off to start our new lives.
