CHAPTER 2
I headed towards the local shopping centre, almost bursting with excitement. It felt so weird to be able to walk around on my own. I spotted a cornershop and bought a cold drink and a pack of cigarettes. Lighting one, I put my oversized headphones on, and blared some drum and bass.
"Aaaahhhh" I thought, exhaling the smoke. This is the life. No parents, no guardian, no having to constantly be aware someone that someone could knock off my sockhat or shades. Alright, I was still cautious about the last one, I didnt want to start a panic if the wrong person saw me.
We humans that were born with animal traits are pretty rare. The government knows of course, and keep tabs on where we live and at we do. The scientists that are studying tell us that somwhere back in our DNA line, somehow, animal DNA was mixed in. Eventually, it was passed down through the generations and and it melded more and more with our human genes, until it became a part of it, resulting in the human baby being born with the certain animal traits.
This all leads down to me. I was born with fox DNA, which resulted in me being born with these ears, eyes and teeth. They can be pretty annoying to cover up (a necessity as the general population have no idea we exist), but at least i CAN cover them up. Ive heard of a couple other like me, one of them being born with eagle DNA. This lead to them having a great pair of tawny wings sprouting from their shoulders.
" Now having wings i dont envy" I thought. I couldn't even imagine trying to hide them!
As I was nearing the shopping centre, I caught a sight of a girl sitting outside a cafe on the otherside of the street. I think what had caught my attention was her eyes. They were the brightest blue I had ever seen, but as sharp and cold as ice. I turned away from those cold eyes, a shiver running down my spine. As I turned away, I noticed she was looking straight at me, and seemed to be talking into something she held in the palm of her hand. I was quite put off by this and continued down the street, occasionaly checking over my shoulder.
I breathed a sigh of relief when i finally got to the shopping centre. It didnt take for the crowds of people and the flashing lights to wipe away my worries about the girl and her unusual behavior. I moved with the crowd through the doors, hanging on tightly to my hat as I did, still worried that it could slip off and the people around me would realise the truth of what I really am.
(A few hours later)
Laden down with far too many bags, I stumbled out of the shopping centre, and turned for home. Today had been amazing! I had bought some new games, clothes, aftershave and a couple of new books. Although I was slightly regretting splurging as much money as I had done, now that I had to carry it all back. I picked an alternate route home this time, choosing to go through the quiet parks, and enjoy the evening silence. I plonked myself down on a bench and took a deep breath of fresh air. Closing my eyes for a second, I let the wind play through my hair and listened to the sounds of nature....... Clunk.
I jolted, and looked around for the disturbance. As my eyes adjusted to the darkness (looked like i'd fallen asleep) I spotted the silhouette of someone sitting next to me.
"Um, hi" I muttered, unsure of what to say.
"Hello" replied a high pitched, musical voice.
"Oh crap, its a girl!" I thought to myself. "The hell am I going to do, ummmm......"
"Its a lovely evening tonight, isnt it?"
I stared at this mysterious girl, too shocked and shy to say anything. She turned to smile at me, and I found myself gazing into a pair of icy eyes. This was the girl from earlier! The one who looked like she wanted to kill me! But looking into her eyes, there was a hidden warmth I hadnt spotted before. It seemed like this girl wasn't so bad after all.
"So, what are you doing out here, all on your own?" I couldnt get over her voice, it was the most beautiful thing I had ever heard.
"W-w-well i'm j-just..." I stuttered out
"Is there something wrong?" She asked, a concerned look on her face.
I mumbled something, hoping it would suffice. God damn, why did I get like this whenever I was around a female I didn't know?
"Can I ask you a question Kai?"
"Sure" I mumbled
"Have you ever wondered what it would be like to rule the world? To be so powerful that no one could ever hope to touch you?"
I glanced over at her, wondering where that question had come from, and where this conversation was going. I did think about her question though.
"I guess it would be pretty cool, although it would be a hell of a lot of responsability, ruling the world" I mused
She gazed at me, as if trying to see through into my mind and tell what I was thinking.
"Yes, I think you will do just fine. One more question"
"Shoot"
"What animal traits do you have?"
I gawped at her, only shock registering in my mind. How did she know? As I tried to figure how she had found out, I thought about our earlier conversation. I started to shake.
"H-how do you know my name" I stuttered. Just then, my hearing caught a slight rustle behind me, and before I could react, a bag was thrust over my head, and I was lifted up and away. I struggled, hoping to break free, until something crashed into the back of my skull, knocking me out. The last thing I remember seeing was that girl, sitting with a sad smile on her face, gazing at me with those icy eyes that were filled with warmth.
