Everyone in the clearing froze.
Safire stood, still hunched over, bowing towards the beast.
"Safire don't move... Don't move!" Hagrid spoke in a hushed voice, almost a whisper. Safire gently tilted her head to look up at the Hippogriff, her black fringe hanging in her eyes as she struggled to see past the hair. Buckbeak glared straight back at her, the animal stared straight into her eyes.
Harry felt a hard grip on his arm, turning to his left he saw Ashley gripping onto his arm tightly, looking at her friend with wide eyes. He gave a forced smile in her direction and placed his hand over hers on his arm, she gave him a quick grateful look before turning back in the direction of the hunched over girl. Both Hermione and Ron had the same reaction as Ashley; as soon as the twig snapped Hermione's hand latched onto Ron's wrist tightly. She looked down at the same time he did, catching each other's eyes for a second before she awkwardly let go, looking anywhere other than Ron as a blush coated her pale cheeks.
Safire watched in amazement as Buckbeak slowly stretched a leg out and lowered his head in a bow. A loud applause rang through the clearing as Safire took a deep breath to calm her racing pulse. Ashley's hand unclamps itself from Harry's arm as she breathed deeply, Safire turned towards her group of friends and offered a nervous smile.
As she turned back we caught the eye of a certain blonde. He was staring straight at her, and she couldn't decipher the look in his eyes; it wasn't happy, it wasn't his scowl or his usual cocky smirk. Concern. It was concern.
Safire shook her head as she looked at Hagrid next, a smile on her face as he gave a proud grin towards the blue eyed girl.
"Hold your arm out and slowly move closer, he might let you touch him now." Safires eyes widened as she nodded slightly, determined to complete her task. Gently she lifted her hand in the air and stretched her arm out towards the animal.
She started with a small step closer, stopping immediately when Buckbeak snapped his beak in her direction. She took a deep breath and loses her eyes for a second, she wasn't going to back out now, she had always been fascinate by magical creatures; especially considering she was one. She continued closer, small steps at a time, slowly building the courage up.
Everyone watched with wonder as he grew closer to the beast, Harry's eyes were wide as she stood just a foot away from the Hippogriff. However everyone erupted into applause when she finally petted the animal. The grin on her ace could be seen from where Draco stood, Blaise watched his friend, silently analysing the almost protective way the blonde boy watched Safire move closer.
"Well done, Safire! Well done!" Hagrid yelled, clapping his hands along with the students. A small blush coated Safire's pale cheeks as people chanted her name, she wasn't use to so much attention. "He may let you ride him now!" R stated, moving towards the girl.
At that moment to word 'what' was spoken in three different places in the clearing. Firstly from Safire as she spun around to face the half-giant, she couldn't believe what had just fell from his mouth; she wasn't ready ride a Hippogriff! The second was from Harry who watched with wide eyes as Hagrid lifted Safire onto Buckbeak's back. The last was from Draco who watched with confusion as the teacher smacked the animals behind and sent him off, Safire gripping tightly onto the Hippogriff's neck as he took off.
The clearing was silent for a moment, no one dared speak a word as Safire and Buckbeak left their view; many students looked around at one another, not knowing what to do.
"Hagrid? Hagrid! Is she going to be ok?" Hermione yelled, running forwards to the professor, Harry not far behind as he tried to catch up with the frizzy haired girl.
"Is she going to be ok? Is it safe?" Harry asked, sliding to a stop on the forest floor as he looked up at his friend. Hagrid smiled,
"She's going to be perfectly fine Harry... Trust me, Safire can take care of herself."
Draco glared at the giant, he couldn't believe how pathetically stupid this man was as to allow a thirteen year old girl to ride a bloody Hippogriff. He shook his head and faced his friends, two of them -Crabbe and Goyle- were playing some immature game while Blaise was smirking at him.
"What?" Draco snapped to his friend. Blaise laughed a little,
"Nothing, it just- you seem to like the new girl." He grinned as Draco's face fell.
"Are you stupid?" He spluttered, just making his friend's grin widen. "What do you mean I 'like' the new girl? She's a blood traitor! Below my league in so many different ways." He scoffed, sounding utterly disgusted with the idea. Blaise just laughed at his friend's reaction.
Draco just rolled his eyes and looked around, then something caught his eye. Immediately he moved closer, leaving his friend behind him, completely confused. Gently Draco lifted the thick, black glasses off the floor, brushing the dirt off before burying them deep in his pocket.
Just then Safire flew back into the clearing, a wide grin on her face as she and Buckbeak came to a halt beside Hagrid. She jumped off and ran her hand through his feathers, only getting a few seconds to thank the creature before she was wrapped in a hug and lifted off the floor by her friend. She laughed and huge him back.
"What's that for Harry?" She asked as e put her down,
"I was worried." He said, looking at the floor with a small blush. Safire chuckled before wrapping her arms around his neck and hugging him tightly, immediately being hugged back.
Draco watched as she was wrapped in Potter's arms. It made him angry, he didn't know why but seeing Potter happy made him furious. His temper snapped as he strutted forwards, pushing a bunch of students out his way.
"Your not dangerous at all are you?" Draco laughed, catching Harry and Safire's attention, their blue eyes widening as the blonde Slytherin strutted forwards. "You great, ugly, brute!"
"Malfoy, no!" Hagrid spoke, but too late.
Buckbeak reared up into his back legs ahead of Malfoy, the blonde boys blood draining from his face in immediate fear. Shadow began barking at the Hippogriff, trying desperately to get him to stop and turn away, but it didn't work.
Without thinking Safire made a move.
She sprinted forwards, faster than she thought she could and shoved Draco out the way; he flew through the air and landed with a thud and a crack. However she had no time to move out of the way, Buckbeak dropped onto her, his talons slicing through her robes and skin, forcing her to fall to the ground.
Safire could hear Draco crying about his arm, she glanced at him, moving her head painfully. He was gripping hold of hi shoulder blade and rolling on the floor, Safire rolled her eyes. Looking down at her arm she realised the extent of we injuries, blood was seeping onto the forest floor as her senses began to slowly fade.
Harry was beside her in seconds, looking down at her, not knowing exactly what to do; Draco was being picked up by Hagrid.
"Harry pick her up, being her to the Hospital Wing!" Hermione rushed. He nodded and gently picked her up, she yelled when a jolt of pain rushed through her body, like a lightning bolt running along her nerves.
"I'm sorry Saf." Harry whispered, holding her tightly. Shadow followed suit, whimpering at the palling face of his master.
Hagrid glanced down at Harry as he struggled to hold Safire in his arms, he couldn't believe how similar they looked. He had always wondered what she would look like, if she'd look like her mother, or her father, or even a mix of both. There was something different between the two, a bond that had already formed. A bond that would probably never break.
