Burgundy Rose

It was a cold and silent morning.

The tightly gripped burgundy rose was the only color in a sea of black.

The thorns pricked my palm, making my hand drip with blood.

The pain was nothing to the deep wrenching ache in my soul.

The tightly gripped burgundy rose was the only color in a sea of black.

My other half lay in a coffin of black cherry wood.

The pain was nothing to the deep wrenching ache in my soul.

The twenty-one salute felt like blows to my heart.

My other half lay in a coffin of black cherry wood.

Two years is too short of a time with the one you love.

The twenty-one salute felt like blows to my heart.

I don't know how I can heal from this.

Two years is too short of a time with the one you love.

We were planning to go to Cabo San Lucas when he came home.

I don't know how I can heal from this.

A little getaway from everyone, just the two of us.

We were planning to go to Cabo San Lucas when he came home.

The plane tickets are on the kitchen counter, waiting to be used.

A little getaway from everyone, just the two of us.

We planned on drinking mojitos on the beach.

The plane tickets are on the kitchen counter, waiting to be used.

It was going to be the honeymoon we never got to have.

We planned on drinking mojitos on the beach.

But instead of our honeymoon, we are together in a cemetery.

It was going to be the honeymoon we never got to have.

I'll never be able to hear his booming laugh again.

But instead of our honeymoon, we are together in a cemetery.

Oh God, someone come save me from this agony.

I'll never be able to hear his booming laugh again.

A folded flag was pressed into my arms.

Oh God, someone come save me from this agony.

Now it's him on a getaway to heaven, and I'm all alone here.

A folded flag was pressed into my arms.

The thorns pricked my palm, making my hand drip with blood.

Now it's just him on a getaway to heaven, and I'm all alone here.

It was a cold and silent morning.

So this poem I wrote my first spring semester in college for my Creative Writing class. I was kinda inspired by Carrie Underwoods' Just A Dream which always makes me tear up. My brother serves in the military too, and I decided to write a perspective on a young bride in hopes of her love coming home. I wanted to create something gripping and emotional that will play on your heartstrings.

I hope you enjoyed this poem and feel the emotions of the unnamed woman.
