You were almost catatonic with excitement on the car seat of Papyrus' red convertible as the early morning wind whipped against your face. You were tempted to ask how close the airport was again, but you were also fairly certain that Papyrus was on the end of his rope with your nagging. He wasn't angry - you were pretty sure anger wasn't an emotion he could pull off, anyway - but you could tell he was already tired of you. You decide to shut up and not annoy him any more.
Even though Papyrus was driving down the highway at the fastest speed legal, the ride seemed to drag along the minutes, as if the universe itself decided to prolong your torture for as long as it could. In an attempt to keep yourself in a cheery mood, you decide to focus your thoughts on the fact that by the end of the day, you'll be getting Sans - your beautiful boyfriend Sans - back.
You smiled. He was finally coming home after that stupid trip he had to go away on. Things would be normal again, and Sans wouldn't be stressing over science in his study and muttering about timelines and anomalies and all that crap you couldn't understand. He said that once he came back he would be leaving behind all of those kinds of studies for good. He promised it, even.
With a slight grimace, your mind immediately recalled the arguments you two had over his science-related endeavors. He was always leaving the house, never had time for you or anyone else, barely ate and left in the middle of the night, always heading to the laboratory of that doctor. You would have assumed it was an affair if you didn't know that the doctor herself tried to convince Sans to stop pursuing the catalyst of the destruction of his life.
Due to your ruminating, you barely registered Papyrus pulling up into the airport's parking lot. When you did, however, you instantly jumped over the door without bothering with handles. You would have started running if Papyrus hadn't quickly grabbed the back of your shirt and told you to pace yourself.
The airport itself was crowded with monsters and humans alike. If you payed attention, maybe you'd have less scrapes from bumping into other people as you moved through the throngs. Papyrus kept a firm hold on you - probably to stop you from running and tripping repeatedly. Your ears were filled with noise and you were acutely aware of how you had scanned majority of the crowds with no sign of him.
"Papyrus, can you see him?" you asked, the growing pit in your stomach seemingly turning into acid. Your gaze flitted around you, parsing between figures close and far, looking for a sign of a bright blue jacket and a white skull. It was then that you noticed something. . . odd.
"NO LUCK. LET'S TRY MOVI-" he stopped mid-sentence when he saw that you were staring, wide-eyed, at someone. He followed your gaze, and then spotted a tall skeleton moving quickly towards you. Despite the ragged greaser look that Sans would never worn, the excitement on his face upon spotting you was unmistakable.
It was Sans.
"(Y/N)!" he cried out in delight, his only burden a duffel bag which was quickly dropped in favor of wrapping his skeletal arms around you. Your shock disappeared for a moment because the way his metacarpals curled around the back of your neck, and the way his other arm went behind your back was so endearingly familiar. There was no way this wasn't Sans.
"S-SANS?" Papyrus stammered out in surprise, snapping you back into reality. You pulled away just slightly to take a good look at your boyfriend.
Sans had definitely changed. His face had prominent cracks around the eyes, for one, and he was taller, somehow. He seemed on par with his younger brother in height, and taller than you (before his trip, you were definitely taller than him). Not to mention the fact that he had summoned and twirled a bone in his hand for no purpose like he usually does, and during that time his eye glowed yellow instead of blue.
