You know those stories where the main character is chosen for an adventure that puts their life at risk? The stories you frequently read in mainstream media. The stories where kids have to fight battles and perform actions they never should. The stories where children have to make adult decisions.
We love those stories. We connect with those characters. We want a giant, teddy bear of a man to show up on our doorstep and tell us, "Yer a wizard." We want our existence to be more than mundane. We want to read a book and watch the characters literally come to life.
What we don't want is the death, turmoil, and destruction that often accompanies our favorite stories.
When I was young, I wanted to grow up to be a princess. I could dream blindly, then. I did not fully grasp the responsibilities of ruling. As I got older, there was no option to become a princess and her duties seemed more tedious than fun. Responsibility to an entire country is a difficult promise. So, my dreams changed.
Unfortunately, that did not prevent me from ending up in the dangerous position I am in now. I guess everyone has an enemy. Mine doesn't just want me dead; he wants me to suffer.
