Chapter 10
"What the hell is going on?" she squawked "why are you yanking me into the rain?"
"Selena, seriously just shut-up! I'm thinking"
"T.Z!" she stopped us under a little, empty sheltered section "What's going on with you?"
"I need to...to...to...talk to....to tell you" I found it hard to speak, to tell her what I wanted to.
"What? You need to tell me what?" she said it in a hard voice with no emotion. Obviously she realised how she sounded. "Sorry but I'm really not liking it here and it's got me all angry. I don't want to be harsh to you, you know that." I could tell she was being honest.
"I know. I just...can't...get out...what I want to say." My face must really show how frustrated and scared I was because the next thing I know she's hugging me.
She stepped back and said "It's ok, I'll be patient and I won't tell any one" she smiled and crossed her heart.
I laughed at that. "Alright then, well um, a weird thing happened today like seriously strange and...wait" I just thought she's gonna have no idea what I'm talking about "I need to start at the start if you're going to understand anything I say"
"Okay" she sounded unsure
"I'm trusting you with my life here so none of this can be repeated alright?" I was being deadly serious
"Yep my lips are sealed" she mimed zipping her lips and when I looked at her straight faced she apologised.
"Right, I've never told anyone before so this is going to be difficult to explain" I took a deep breath and started "Have you ever wondered what my glasses are for? There not just a fashion statement, I need these because, well," I looked around to see if it was safe to say out-loud "I see people without the walls around them,-" I was talking really fast now to get it all out "- without the barrier they hold up, without the consume they wear to fit in. When I take my glasses off I see the real person they are, I could look at the most popular, slutty girl in school and she could look like a nerd to me with out glasses and treating a popular girl like a nerd, well, it gets you beaten up basically, that's why I wear the glasses because in the past I've got in a bit - well a lot - of trouble."
"I KNOW!" she shouted
My mind went blank "What?"
"I've said that three times! How could you have not heard me?"
"I...um, I guess I was trying to get all the words out, but what? How do you know?"
"Have you ever looked at me without your glasses?"
"No" I went to take them off but in a flash she had both my wrists in one of her small hands and she took a breath of, was that relief? "um, why have you got my hands?"
"Why did you not look at me before?" she still didn't let go
"I was respecting you, you're a good friend and it's rude to intrude"
She smiled "There we go" she let go and as I went to touch my glasses she said "No you don't!" I froze in place, she seemed pretty strong "If you look at me without your glasses then there is no respect between us which means no friendship"
I loved her as a friend so I didn't look even though I really wanted to.
"But it still doesn't make sense, how do you know all of that?"
"Well, I-" the bell went. Damn "I'll talk to you later"
She got up so I got up too. "You promise?" I put my hand out to shake on it but instead she kisses me, short but fierce. Then her lips brush to my ear "I promise" she whispered as she took her hand from my hair and walked away.
