"Elizabeth, hurry up! We don't want to be late!" my roommate, and best friend, Jocelyn shouted throughout our apartment. I rolled my eyes before quickly putting my shoes on, grabbing my purse and meeting her in the front room.
"Took you long enough." she laughs at me as we walk down the street.
"Oh be quiet." I laugh too, hailing a taxi.
"Where to?" the man says in his thick New York accent.
"The World Exposition of Tomorrow please." Jocelyn politely tells him.
"I heard Howard Stark was going to be there!" Jocelyn gushes. I internally roll my eyes; she's been obsessed with him ever since she heard about the World Exposition of Tomorrow.
"Why are you so obsessed with him Lyn?" I ask her. She's always obsessed with the guys she can't have and rejects the guys who want her. It's getting a little old.
"Well, if we get there early enough, we can get up close to the stage. I've heard that he invites girls up onto the stage." she says, fixing her shirt to show off her breasts. I roll my eyes and look out the window.
I wasn't very excited for the convention; nothing about it seemed exciting to me. But then again, I'm not one for change. As the taxi driver stops in front of the gate to the convention, I pay him for the ride before Jocelyn and I get out of the taxi. She grabs my hand and pulls me towards the different stands.
"Howard Stark's show is starting soon. We should go and get good spots now." Jocelyn says eagerly before taking off towards where his show was going to be.
"Jocelyn, don't run!" I yell after her. She always does this and it gets tiring. Sometimes I even wonder why I'm friends with her. As I catch up to her, she's pushing her way through the crowd, earning a few annoyed glares. I follow her and murmur a soft, "Sorry." to everyone as I push past.
"Lyn, you need to stop doing that! It's not lady like!" I scold her as I stop to stand next to her.
"Oh, lighten up Beth!" she laughs before looking up at the stage. The lights focused on the stage as a group of women, barely wearing anything, walk onto the stage.
Then, a man started rising from the bottom of the stage. Everyone "Oohed" and "Ahhed" as Howard Stark himself rose from the stage. Jocelyn started jumping up and down next to me while giggling like a love struck teenager. I rolled my eyes and focused my attention back on the stage.
"Welcome, ladies and gentleman, to the future." he smiles at the crowd. All the girls, except me, swoon at his smile.
I scoff and say to Jocelyn, "I'm leaving."
"Where are you going?" she asks, not taking her attention off of the man on the stage.
"I'm going to talk to Dr. Erskine. He's here tonight." All she does in response is wave her hand in my direction. I fight the urge to roll my eyes, again, and make my way out of the crowd.
I noticed a rather small man make his way out of the crowd as well, but I didn't think anything of him. He was probably only going to use the restroom before the show got good. I make my way over to the military sign up center and walk through the rooms to the back where I knew Dr. Erskine would be.
"Hello Elizabeth. Are you looking for Dr. Erskine?" my co-worker, Mary, asked me as I approached the examination rooms.
"Yes, I am actually. You don't happen to know where he is, do you?" I ask, standing in front of her.
"He actually went out to walk around and look through the exhibits. He should be back soon though." she tells me before walking down the hall. I decide to look through the military exhibit before returning a little while later to talk to Dr. Erskine.
