"Where exactly are we going Dr. Erskine?" I ask as we travel through the countryside.

"Not very far away actually. We are headed for Camp Lehigh." he tells me.

"Where is that?" Steve asks.

"Wheaton, New Jersey. We'll only be on the train for about two hours." Dr. Erskine answers him. Steve nods and leans back in his seat.

"Get acquainted you two. You'll be around each other almost constantly for the time being." Dr. Erskine tells us before getting up and leaving. Steve looks at me before getting up and quickly sitting across from me.

"So, where do you want to start?"

By the time we had arrived at Camp Lehigh, I knew quite a lot about Steve. He also knew a lot about me. Although the one subject we had avoided talking about was our families. My mother died when I was born and my dad died just recently in the war. I had received the telegram just a couple weeks ago. He was my everything, my whole world for 23 years.

Jocelyn was there to help me through it, and so were my other close friends. But none of them really quite understood what I was going through, the pain I was in every single day. The pain that I'm still in. But I have a feeling Steve would understand that pain. Even though he hasn't told me anything about his parents, I've come to know the look of a child who's lost a parent to the war. Or even lost a parent at all.

But it's not something I'll bring up now. Maybe later, once we know and trust each other more.

"Let's get you two settled in. Your training starts tomorrow Steve." Dr. Erskine said as we got off the train.

"I'm giving you an hour to settle in, Elizabeth, before I come and get you." he continues.

"What do you need me for?" I ask, struggling to hold onto my third bag.

"Here, I can take that for you Elizabeth." Steve offers when he sees me struggling.

I hesitate for a moment before saying, "Thank you Steve." He takes a bag from me and we continue to walk away from the train.

"I'm going to introduce you to everyone." Dr. Erskine says. I nod my head as a soldier driving a truck stops in front of us.

"Ya wanna a lift Doc?" he says, his southern drawl very evident.

"Yes, that would be wonderful." Dr. Erskine answers. In a matter of minutes, all of our bags were in the back of the truck and all three of us were sitting in the truck.

"Well, ain't you a pretty one?" he smirks, looking at me through the rear view mirror. I blush and look away.

"Ain't you gonna answer me?" he says, sounding irritated.

"Thank you sir." I say timidly.

"How 'bout we go to dinner tonight?" he smirks again.

"Uh..." I say, not knowing how to say no.

"I'm sorry sir, but we already have plans for dinner. Right?" Steve pipes up, looking at me.

"Uh, yes, that's right. Thank you for reminding me." I laugh nervously. The soldier eyes both of us in the rear view mirror before scoffing and looking away. The rest of the ride is silent until we reach the barracks.

"Thank you." Dr. Erskine says after we all have our bags.  His answer is a quick nod before he starts the truck's engine and drives away.

"Thank you Steve." I say after he drove away.

"Of course." he replies, blushing slightly. I smile at the small, nervous man and pick up my bags.

"You will be staying with all the other nurses Elizabeth. However, you do get your own barrack. Steve, you, unfortunately, must share a barrack with a few other soldiers in training." Dr. Erskine explains.

"Thank you sir." Steve answers.

"The nurse's barracks are to the left. Your barrack number is 351 Elizabeth. The soldier's are to the right. Your barrack number is 189." Dr. Erskine tells us before walking away.

"I'll see you later Steve." I say politely.

"Yeah, see you later." he says. I pick up my bags and walk in the direction of the nurse's barracks. Eventually, I find barrack number 351. I turn the door handle  and am surprised to find it unlocked.

"Hello? Anyone in here?" I call out. But no one answers me. I shrug it off and set my bags down on one of the beds. I look through the barrack and memorize the layout. As I wait for Dr. Erskine to come and get me, I begin to unpack and settle in. Soon, a knock on the door sounds.

"Elizabeth, are you ready?" Dr. Erskine calls out.

"Yes, I'll be right there." I answer, putting my last piece of clothing away in one of the trunks at the ends of the beds. I quickly put on my shoes and a jacket before opening the door.

"Ready to go?" he asks me with a smile. I nod my head and follow him away from my new home.
