Noah and I are sitting in the back of Lois's Volkswagen Beetle, me leaning heavily against the window so our legs won't touch, him texting viciously on his phone. Lois is singing along to "I Would Walk 500 Miles" which I only know from How I Met Your Mother, lowering and heightening her voice in the most hilarious way. I'm not laughing, though, because Noah's presence is on my radar, and it's freaking me the fuck out.
"Ooh, Steph, tell Noah about your family," Lois orders, bouncing eagerly in her seat. "Bro, she's got, like, fourteen siblings."
"Six, actually. Madison graduated from UNC Chapel Hill last year, she's oldest," I begin, crossing my legs. "Then Katherine, she and her boyfriend are attached at the hip, and I think he might've moved in? I don't know. I'm the oldest after Kathy, then Joseph, he's kind of a loser. Becca's thirteen and dating everyone, then Sam, he's Mom's favorite, and Dana, Mom's actual favorite."
"That's...special," Noah decides, lifting his head from his phone and smiling at me. "Aren't parents not supposed to have favorite children?"
"Yeah, my mom doesn't believe in that."
"I see."
