"So do you like him?"

I swallow my coffee and look up from my book. Lois and I are having what she calls a silent-bonding day, during which we sit in each other's company but don't speak. We're at some coffee shop she's been telling me is "bomb" for three weeks now, and I must say—the caramel lattes are delicious.

"Um, it's silent-bonding day," I reply, but I close my book and prepare to talk anyway. "And could you specify?"

"My brother. Do you like him?" she repeats, narrowing her eyes.

"Um, no?"

"Stephanie."

"I mean; as a person, he's— "

"I mean like like."

"Oh, then, uh—am I allowed to?"

Her eyes soften and she grabs my hand. "Well, technically, no, since you're a minor and he's an adult, but if you're asking for my permission, then of course. Look, Steph, I know how hard it's been for you to trust us after what happened to you, and I wouldn't ever tell you not to date someone you're comfortable with."

"You know what's weird?" I say, resting my cheek against my palm. "I actually didn't really have a hard time trusting you. I had a little apprehension towards Noah, but that's a pretty normal reaction to a stranger. I don't know; I think I always liked you guys, maybe. You're very...comforting."

She smiles softly and squeezes my hand. "I'm glad, Steph."
