Chapter One: Lancaster Academy (Carter)

The alarm clock by my bedside beeps and the glowing numbers 6:15 a.m. glare at me through the darkness in the room. I hear a groan in the bed across from me. I quickly shut the alarm clock off and almost at the exact same time Kain and I jump out of bed to begin our daily routine. We have been roommates for two years, since at Lancaster you have to live at school beginning highschool.  Our school Lancaster Academy has a required wake up time for breakfast which begins at 6:45a.m. If you feel like it you can miss it, since our first class starts at 8:00a.m. But since most of the classes require stamina and strength it's best you don't miss breakfast.

I reach out towards the curtains, yank them open and turn on the lights. It is foggy outside, a dark cloud hang's in front of the sun and a light mist seems to float around lazily in the sky. "Hey Carter can you pass me my shirt." I look around on his bed and see a neatly piled up stack of clothes lying there. "Why don't I just hand you all of them, I have a feeling you don't want to be walking around half naked." I say as I pick them up and throw it at him. He catches it and tucks it under his arm next to the towel. "Thanks, I'm going to go take a shower."

I nod, I had already taken a shower last night so I felt no need to go. I quickly put on a tight fitting shirt and a loose pair of shorts and stand in front of the long mirror next to the door. I run my hand through my curly blonde hair and smile. "Perfect."

A knock startles me from admiring myself in the mirror and I open it after looking through the keyhole. "Hey, don't you have a card. You can open it yourself."
Kain looks at me sheepishly, "I kind of forgot it." Kain said as he walks in drying his hair. He picks up the key card on his desk and waves it in front of me. "See!"

"Fine but next time you're going to stand out there until breakfast as punishment." Kain just smiles lazily. "Yeh, yeh. Sure." I flop down on my bed, we still have ten minutes before we actually have to go down to the dinning hall. I end up resting for exactly five minutes before Kain drags me off my bed and shoves me out the door.
"What are you doing we still have five minutes before breakfast officially starts." I grumble.
Kain looks at me like I am clueless. "We have to get good seats remember or we will end up like losers. If we have to sit at a loner table and get picked on, I would rather not eat breakfast and die during training."

I sigh and let him drag me along. Technically no one actually picks on you, however if you do sit at a loner table, the stronger kids think of you as prey and beat you to a pulp during fighting classes. I would rather not go through that, though I'm considered pretty strong in groups so we mostly never have to worry about that, but it's our first day of being a Junior (third year of highschool) so ranking's start a new.
************
Apparently everyone had the same idea of getting a table since there were large groups of people already seated together and everyone who had finished getting breakfast were quickly walking to join the large groups and avoiding the table in the corner. Kain and I rush in line and succeed in getting our breakfast fast. We quickly look around for a table to join.

A familiar hand shoots up out of the largest group, probably the official popular table, waving towards us. Brown hair and green eyes follow, and I immediately know who he is. Kain and I speed walk over to him and seat ourselves next to him, slightly pushing the other people over. "Hey Garret, thanks for saving us a seat." I said smiling. Kain gushed his face glowing, "Yessss. Thank you so much, I thought we wouldn't get a seat. Now we're officially the popular group. "
*******
There is an unwritten rule in our school, that seemed to have developed over time, which says that wherever you sit on your first day of school is where you will sit for the rest of the year, unless someone personally invites you to join their table. So wherever you sit determines your whole school life. Pretty sad right, but that's just how it turned out.
I greet everyone at the table after I sit down. Some I already know from the previous years but most of them I had not seen before. There were a few girls at our table, but only around five, since Lancaster Academies population mostly consisted of boys. I'd say it was a 20 to one ratio of boys to girls, since our school is a fighting school, not many girls got accepted.

I quickly ate my breakfast, a bowl of surprisingly good oatmeal, an apple and this really weird tasting energy bar. (I searched the package and it turns out that it had expired a year ago. Which explains the tiny weird green fluff thing that was on the raisin.) I wait for Kain to finish, since he is an extremely slow eater, liking to savor every bite like it was his last.

"Carter what class do you have after breakfast?" I look over to Garret who I assume is the one who asked me the question. "Weapon making." I answer. Garret shrugs,"I don't understand why they give that class, especially with all the advanced technology we have now. Hand guns, guns, machine guns, and even bigger machine guns."

"Uh you basically said gun four times, but I understand why they teach the class. They probably have the class for times when you get a mission and you have to escape fast, especially for times when you don't have a weapon. So if you are ever lost in the woods or need to hunt, we can at least survive and we won't be unarmed in emergencies."

Garret just looks at me before replying. "Tsk. Tsk. Always the smart aleck." He shakes his head in a disapproving way. I cross my arms, which was totally pointless, and unfold them again to poke him in the stomach. Garret puts his hands up in surrender. "Hey calm down Carty, you know I was just kidding." At that exact moment Kain knocks over his spoon and a lump of oatmeal flies through the air and splats on Garret's face. Time seemed to stop itself as the whole table suddenly became quiet and turned to look at Garret's reaction.

Kain gasps,  "Oooopps..." Time went back to normal and the whole table started laughing. Garret joined as he wiped the oatmeal off his face. Some people even congratulated Kain on his awesome aiming skills, though Kain protested that he had just accidently knocked his spoon while grabbing his apple. The doors to the dining hall slam open and the room goes quiet as an out of breath student looks up with an amazed look on his face.

"Hey what happened." A boy across the room shouts to the boy who had ran in. He quickly stands up straight and points outside. "You got to see this."

Nobody questioned what it was, but everyone got up and rushed towards the door.
