"This is just the beginning of the end. Soon all life sources will die. As of now you all will be in charge of building an underground city. For those of us that can survive the war. We will have to work fast. Little to no breaks from now on. Got it? I and the rest of them will go look for food. If we have to, we will steal it. We need all the help we can get. If you find someone who wants to help us then show them what to do. Okay then, I think you have the idea. Right, then move out." Said the Lieutenant and everyone stood up and saluted for his leave. He has so much to do now that word has gotten out about this war.
"Hey Sal. Don't look to down in the dumps okay?" I looked to my friend Mark. He always had a way of knowing if something was bothering me. No matter how much I tried to hide it.
I smiled. "Oh? Me in the dumps? Ha I think not!" I said and threw an apple at him. "Keep it. You will need it if we are to stay up and help build the city tonight." I thought for a moment. "Also take this." I handed him his pocket knife that he outside last night. "I think it will come in handy." I said and began to walk to my bunk to think for a while. But he stopped me before I could, as usually that's Mark.
"Wait Sal. Don't think too hard we need a clear mind on the job tonight. Thanks for giving these to me also." He smiled and I nodded then left. I think it would be good to say that I am not one of those girls who whimper at every little thing. I find it amusing to watch them cry over a small spider. Though it is not every day now that you see that... It hasn't been long at all that we had to get ready for this. We have always been training for something like this to happen. We just never thought it would happen so soon.
I lie back on my bunk and think to when I was just a little girl. My parents died in the war when I was only 8 years of age. My Grandma was the only one I had left from my family. She passed away when I was 14. She had been very sick that year and I had to do everything I could to help her out. I didn't want her to be sick. I did all the chores I could think of hoping it would make her get better. But then one day I woke up and she was calling for me. I always slept in the living room then. It was the closest to her room. That way I could always check up on her. But that one day, when she was calling for me I heard her crying. I ran to her room hoping she didn't fall but, when I got there I didn't want to ask what was wrong. I knew it then she was about to pass. Her face had gone white, she could barely breathe, and she was looking all over for me. I ran to her side crying and held her hand tightly but then loosened my grip as to not hurt her. Then she turned to me and smiled a smile I will never ever forget until the day I die.
"There you are... My sweet little Sally, I've been waiting for you." She coughed. "Do you remember everything I told you about your Mother and Farther?" She looked at me and I nodded. "Good I want you to take in their footsteps and become a hero. I don't want you to feel sad for me. It is my time to go." She said that and I started crying even more. "No, baby girl please don't cry. Everything will be okay I promise. I have a friend I want you to go live with. They have a son about your age. I think you will like him. Think of him as your bother okay? Now, now I don't want to see those tears of yours whip them off." She smiled softly and whipped my tears away with her favorite handkerchief. "Here I want you to have this." She put it in my hands. It was soft and it smelt just like her. "Now sweetie please don't mourn for me okay? I will love you forever and ever always. I will always be with you right here in your heart." She put her hand over my heart and I held it there not wanting to let go. She smiled at me and patted my head and smelled my hair. She always liked the smell of my hair... "Your hair smells like the flowers we planted two springs ago. Remember? You wanted to plant Tulips, Roses, Violets and Irises?" She said in a soft tone. I just nodded and held her hand closer to my heart. I didn't want her to say anymore. I just wanted to cry and hold her while I still could. I don't want this to happen Nanna...
