How to Survive Type 1 Diabetes

What is Type 1 Diabetes?

For those of you who don't know, type 1 diabetes is an incurable disease where your body part called the pancreas just stopped working. Your pancreas makes a substance called insulin that allows glucose (sugar) to get into your cells so your cells have energy to do their work. When you have type 1 diabetes, your pancreas stops making the insulin so your cells get tired and the glucose just floats around in your blood causing high blood sugars. Now that the cells are hungry in your body, they need to eat something, so they eat your fat. That is why many newly diagnosed type 1 diabetics are often underweight. It is also what produces keytones in your urine or blood. When you first get type 1 diabetes, you most likely use a good old fashion insulin vile and syringe to give insulin through shots. You might also have a pen. And, if you have had diabetes for long enough, you might have an insulin pump. This gives the insulin your body needs for the cells to get the glucose they need.

Never forget, there is nothing that you, or anyone else did to cause your diabetes and there is no way you could prevent it. Don't let anyone tell you any different. You might be wondering how I know so much about type 1 diabetes. The answer is simple. I experience it first hand. I was diagnosed when I was eleven. (Well, I still am 11 but I've learned enough to write this) So whenever you feel like you can't do diabetes anymore, just remember your not alone in this situation. I suggest finding a friend who also has diabetes or going to special diabetes camps in the summer.
