STORM AND SILENCE : Ambrose

850 88 25

1928, England

"Grandma!" calls the girl. "I have news to share!"

Just like her grandmother, brown eyes, brown hair.

The same eyes I fell for eighty nine years ago

Nine decades. All these years and no more

Since her property advice that foggy London day

Glad am I still that we took the same way

She always said she wanted no man

But though she was braver than any other woman

Every time she still melted in my arms

She would be willing even to take up arms

To fight bravely for the feminist cause

I didn't want her to; I feared her loss

"Grandma! England has universal suffrage!"

Her eyes light up, fire undimmed by age

I look at her face and I think

Back to the time when the ship was to sink

And I made her go even as she cried

I should have told her I was breaking inside.

I'm grateful fate had it that we met again

Never again did I want to feel the same pain

But I did, for the love of my little Ifrit

I, the granite rock who melted in Egypt

Kiss the girl's forehead and send her away

And turn to see her grandmother dancing away

Her silver hair flies; she trips; I catch her

Our eyes meet and suddenly I remember

Her drunk and being attacked by the floor

All this time; nine decades and no more

We pretended to be married and it came true

And together we ruled the world too

Powerful rich Ambrose, angry feminist Lillian

But age takes its toll on everyone

We stayed this long, she was awaiting something

I hold her in my arms whose strength is fading

Her hard won fight; she's happy and I am too

"Wife" I say. "Are we staying for the next vote too?"

"No, Dick dear, I've already voted remember?" she says

How could I forget? I look into her face

We know we changed each other's lives

I know now and she knows its time

I kiss her with all the passion of 1839

"Lillian" I tell her, the last time "I love you"

"Dick, you pseudo-chauvinist bastard, me too"

I smile, she smiles, and then together we go

We take our leave and we depart
