Luke's pov

September, 2004 (it's fiction, Luke is eight at the moment, Jack is fifteen and Ben is seventeen)

I heard the voice of our butler at my door, telling me it was time for dinner. I put down my comic book and got up, running past him and down the long staircase. I ran into our dining room where my mom, dad and two brothers were already sitting.

"Luke, fix your tie!" My mom shook her head at me, pulling me over to her and straightening it. "All the other eight year olds are going to think you were raised in a barn!"

I sat down next to Ben, my eldest brother. "Mom, I'm going to public school, all the other kids won't be wearing ties."

"Calum will," My mom said.

"Calum is a family friend, he knows I wasn't raised in anything close to a barn," I argued.

"Luke," My dad warned. "Let it go."

My family, the Hemmings Family, we're known as one of the 'high class' families. My dad co-owns the company Hemhood, which is a world-wide production of boats. And by boats, I mean big boats, yachts, boats you can live on.  My mom on the other hand, she's a home-decorator. And not just any regular decorator, she's one that people pay thousands of dollars for her to come to their house just to give her opinion on how they should have their house. To me, it's a stupid thing but I guess that's why we have such a big and well decorated house.

"So," My dad started after swallowing a bite of his supper. "Grade four, huh son?"

I nodded and swallow my food too. Table manners, one thing that drives my parent's insane if you don't have. "I'm with the big kids now! I get my own locker!"

"I remember fourth grade," Jack, my other brother, laughed. "The girls get hotter and you get..."

He trailed off when my mom cleared her throat. I really wanted to hear what he had to say.

"Finish your dinner, Luke, I'm driving you tomorrow morning," My mom said.

I didn't even finish my dinner; I just ran up the stairs and to my bedroom. I changed into my pajamas, didn't even bother to brush my teeth, I just went to bed, excited to be with the big kids.

"Have a good day, Luke," My mom said when she pulled the car to a stop.

"I'm scared," I blurted, not unbuckling my seatbelt.

"Just remember to straighten your tie and stand up straight, you'll fit right in," My mom said.

I shook my head and looked at the other kids. No one was wearing ties, they were in jeans and graphic tees. How could I fit in?

My eyes wandered to a girl who looked different from the rest. Her hair was knotted and she wore a white shirt with clear stains on them. Below the stained shirt was a jean skirt. I looked at my mom.

"Mom? Why does that girl have dirt on her face?" I asked.

My mom looked at the girl and then back at me. "Go on Luke, go to class."

***

I hurried into my class when the bell rang and found a seat next to my best friend, Calum.

"I hear we have a new student," He said to me.

"Really? I hope they're good at soccer. We need some better players on our team," I said truthfully.

Our school's sport teams weren't that well and I happened to be on most of them. My parent's thought that it would help with business to put the rich kid on the school teams.

Calum shook his head. "I doubt it, I heard it's a girl, girls are weak."

I pouted and crossed my arms. That sucks.

"Alright class!" My teacher called. "I'm Mrs. Gaskin, welcome to fourth grade."

Mrs. Gaskin was about to carry on with her introduction when she was interrupted by a quiet knock on the door. All our eyes moved to the door.

"Come in," Mrs. Gaskin said with a smile.

A small figure walked through the door. It was the girl I saw earlier. She must be our new student. I heard whispered rise throughout my classmates and I looked over at Calum. He was looking at the girl.

"You must be our new student," Mrs. Gaskin spoke up, giving our class a glare then gently looking at the girl. "What's your name."

The girl played with her hands and looked up at Mrs. Gaskin. "Brooklyn."

"Welcome to our class, Brooklyn. Feel free to pick any seat you want," Our teacher said softly.

Brooklyn looked around the classroom. I did too. We had a pretty large classroom, there weren't many seats left. She chose a seat across from Calum. I looked at her, about to give her a friendly look, but she wasn't paying attention. She kept looking, or maybe picking, at her hands. She seemed nervous.

But then again, who wouldn't when it's your first day at a new school and everyone is already whispering about you.
