James POV
After the end of a day of skiving, I met Lily in the common room. It was late and the other gryffindors were in bed. So it was just Lily and me.
She came over and sat down beside me. 'So,' she said.
'So what?' I snapped.
Lily took a deep breath. 'Where have you been?' she asked.
'You must know where I have been. I sat with you at lunch,' I pointed out.
'Before that,' she challenged.
'Nowhere special,' I said.
Then sighed. There was no getting around Lily.
'I skipped class because I sit next to Remus,' I admitted, then burst out, 'but why did he trip us up? Why is he avoiding me?'
I was being truthful. I had no idea why Remus was behaving so oddly. Maybe September is a bad time of year in the werewolf cycle? I thought. Then I remembered Remus once said to me, 'Any period of time from August onwards is great. Transforming doesnt hurt and we arent as vicious.'
I thought of Sirius, asleep upstairs, and the bang-out-of-order way I treated him today. I had to apologise, and get advice.
I wished Lily good night and headed up to the boys dormitory.
Sirius wasnt there.
Neither was Remus.
But there were clawprints leading to the open window.
