I couldn't believe my eyes. Michael slowly walked towards me, looking just as surprised as I was. The hispanic guy, Sucre, frowned.
"Wait, Mike, you know this chick?" he asked, gesturing towards me. Michael nodded, not taking his eyes off of me.
"She's my sister-in-law." he whispered, blue eyes wide. Sucre sputtered.
"What?! Sister-in-law? That means she's-"
"Lincoln Burrows' wife." I finished for him. "Hi, I'm Melanie Burrows." I held out my hand and he shook it tentatively. His eyes scanned over me, appalled. This was the reaction I was used to getting ever since Linc had been charged with first degree murder.
"Mel, what the hell are you doing in here?" Michael asked, sitting down on my bed. I leaned against the wall in front of him and stuffed my hands in my pockets.
"I've done some bad things, Mikey." I blinked a few times, trying to fight back my emotions. "Really bad things." He frowned and looked up at me slowly. I could tell the gears in his head were turning rapidly as he thought about what I said.
"Melanie, don't tell me that was you in the news." As soon as he said that, I looked away, knowing he was going to be disappointed. Disappointing Michael felt like the worse thing in the world. I heard him stand up and take a step towards me. "Why?"
"I had to!" I said cried out. My heart squeezed as I thought of the reasons why I killed them.
"All those people, Mel." he whispered, staring at me with an unreadable expression.
"They deserved it! Every single one of them." I hissed, not wanting him to judge me.
"Ooo, looks like Fish here got himself hooked on the new girl." A southern accent floated through my cell. I turned towards the entrance and saw a skinny guy with greasy, wild hair, smiling at me like I was a piece of meat. A violent shiver ran down my spine, but I refused to show how unnerved I was.
"Beat it, T-bag." Sucre said, pushing the guy back. T-bag tsked and held out his pockets, which were pulled out.
"Now, now pitbull. I'm just here to welcome the fresh piece of goodness that has graced this prison." T-bag licked his lips and stepped into my cell again. "I can offer you something none of these boys here can handle." He offered me one of his pockets. "What do you say, suga?" He drawled.
"I'd rather be pummeled with a wrench than get with someone like you." I snapped, walking towards him. "This is a small cell and it's getting kinda crowded. So if you could just-" I reached out and pushed him. "-exit, I would highly appreciate it." He stumbled back and caught himself on the railing. T-bag chuckled darkly and wiped under his nose.
"You're gonna regret that." He growled. "Better watch your back." He didn't look back as he sauntered away and a young guy grabbed onto his pocket as he walked by another cell.
"You don't wanna be enemies with him, mamí. You need to be careful." I turned at Sucre's words and my eyes went to Michael.
"What are you doing in here, Michael? You don't have a violent bone in your body." Michael got up and stood next to Sucre.
"I, uh, held up a bank." A laugh slipped through my lips at the confession.
"And you ended up in a level one prison? Shouldn't you be in like a local prison or something?" I joked. Sucre pressed his lips together, holding in a laugh. Michael sighed, smirking.
"I wanted to be closer to Linc." At those words, I felt as if all of the air left my body.
"Linc is in here?" I whispered, not believing it. Michael raised his eyebrows.
