------------------------------------------------That bell will ring any second now indicating school is over and we can all go home. Normally I would slump back into my seat and wait until everyone else leaves school, but my nerves were so on edge today. As soon as that bell rings I am out of here. I just hope my feet won't fail me. I already had two panic attacks today and I could feel a third one coming. Come on bell just ring already. Leaning forward in my seat I watch the seconds go by, three, two, one.
As soon as the bell goes off I jump up out my seat throwing my bag over my right shoulder. Just as I go to leave the room another student naturally stands up and accidentally trips me making my fall to my face. As I lay there on the floor to embarrassed to get up the boy who tripped me just says sorry and walks off. I continue to lay there on the floor listening as students talk about me, my face burning red from the humiliation. By the time I pull myself up off the floor I'm the last one in the room. Once I'm out the school my shoulders drop as I see its still raining, and my parents are nowhere to be seen. With all the benches filled with other students I sit on the bare concrete keeping my eyes peeled for my ride.
Hours go by and my parents still haven't showed up. Nearly everyone else has left and only a few cars remain. Probably some teachers that had to stay behind for a while. It's still raining but it has calmed down a bit. Even though it's only about a fourty-five minute walk home I'm still going to get soaking wet. I put my phone into my bag hoping it won't get ruined by the rain. Knowing I'll get soaked anyway I take my time and walk out into the cold rain. I'll be surprised if I don't get sick over this. The rain is being very weird, its like someone has a remote to turn the rain on and off, make it storm or sprinkle and they just keep pushing the buttons over and over.
I've been walking for maybe five minutes now in the hard rain. I'm soaked head to toe and I can still see the school behind me. Thinking I hear a vehicle behind me I glance over my shoulder barely seeing a black SUV slowly down next to me. I snap forward trying not to panic. Why was this guy driving so slow next to me? OMG and I going to be kidnapped?! My heart races and I break out into a sweat as the vehicle stops next to me. After a few short seconds the passenger window rolls half way down and Jason shoots me a softly smile.
"Hey buddy!" He proclaims excitedly. Though its hard to hear him over the now hard rain.
"Hi" I reply simply as he rolls the window down all the way revaling Mr. Larson sitting at the drivers seat. Mr Larson leans over closer to the window his arm resting against the arm rest propping himself up.
"Hey son do you need a ride?" Mr. Larson asks. I quickly shake my head no, making my brain rattle around inside and water fling off my head.
"No sir. I-I'm almost home, a-and I don't wanna ruin your seats I-I'm soaking wet." I say a bit to quickly and clearly panicking. and the rain slows down once again, now a calm rain.
"It's just a car son. I don't want you to get sick. Now get in before the rain picks up again." Mr. Larson says as he sits back up unlocking the doors.
Furrowing my brows and pressing my lips together I reluctantly get into the back seat. I scoot over to the middle hump and buckle up as Jason rolls his window back up. Before Mr. Larson begins driving again he cranks the heat up and points the vent to where I am.
"Can you feel the heat?" Mr. Larson asks glancing at me through the rearview mirror.
"Yes sir. t-thank you sir." I stutter out mentally slapping myself. Mr. Larson -with a satisfactory smile on his face- begins driving again. With the roads wet and it still raining he drives a bit slower than he should.
I've leaned that Mr Larson doesn't rush things. He is a very relaxed calm man. A normal car ride from the school to my house should only take about maybe ten or fifteen minutes, but this ride -even though only three minutes have passed- feels like it has been ten minutes."Hey dad can we do tacos tonight?" Jason asks his dad breaking the silence.
Mr Larson presses his lip together unsure. "It's not the right time of year for tacos."
"But I really want some tacos! I did my chores, past my tests and I made friends with the new kid! I deserve some tacos." He states matter of fact like.
Mr. Larson pull up at a stop sign and looks at me through the rearview mirror. "Is that true? Are you two friends?" He asks with a slight look of worry.
"Um yeah I-I guess.. " I say softly looking down at my hands in my lap.
"Well that's great!" Mr Larson exclaims making me look back up. He reaches over patting Jason on the shoulder. "Good job, I'm proud of you!"
"So I get tacos...right?" Jason asks looking at his dad. His father doesn't reply. Come to think of it Jason and his father don't look anything alike. Maybe Jason looks like his mom, or he is adopted. Another few minutes go by in silence, well sorta the rain beating down and the vehicles roof makes more than enough noise. A deep frown appears on my damp face as the seat around me in now also soaking wet. I'll defiantly have to pay them back for this kindness, its just a matter of how.
Damian I hope I didn't make you too uncomfortable this morning in class. I know how scary it can be to be the new kid." Mr Larson says looking at me through the mirror once again. Sincerity fills his voice letting me know he really was just playing around.
"It's okay sir. " I say reassuringly towards him.
"Don't call him sir, his name is Princess Lady Balls remember?" Jason covers his mouth trying to hold back his laughter as we all recall Emily's sad joke and laughing fit. I can't help but slightly chuckle myself remembering how red her face turned. Jason and I both look over at Mr. Larson who wants to be serious but can't fight his own smile and laughter.
Eventually -after passing it three times- Mr. Larson pulls up into my empty drive way. He parks the car then looks around. "Are your folks home?" Jason asks also looking around for any signs of anyone home.
"My parents are probably still at work, they have to work late sometimes." I say not knowing how sad I sounded to them.
"Well when will they be back? I'm not sure I should leave you here alone." Mr Larson says his father mode kicking in.
"Hey you could come eat tacos with us!" Jason says turning and looking at me with a huge hopeful smile on his face.
"We will have plenty to spare it won't be no sweat off our backs." Mr. Larson says turning and looking at me also.
My face burning red as they both stare at me. I lean my back against the seat as I undo the seat belt. "No thank you, my parents will be home soon."
"Hey wait before you go." Jason starts while he turns around. He unzips his back pack, pulls out a pen and some paper then writes something down. "No more walking in the rain, we live a block away so if you need a ride just call me okay." He says turning back around handing me a small piece of paper with his number on it.
"Um, thanks." I say sounding like a question.
"Well alright, we will see you at school tomorrow." Mr Larson says smiling at me.
"Thank you for the ride!" I say waving to
Thank you for the ride!"i say waving to them as I dash out the car."Anytime!" They both chimed as I ran to my house.
