Honestly, do I even have to spell this one out for you? Below, this will have MAJOR Space boy spoilers, please read that before you go on.
When Amy first met Oliver, hilariously, he stepped on her lunch. He was stoic and paid no attention, considering that the believes the nothing fabricated everyone but himself.
Just think about that for a second. Amy yelled at him even though he continued to ignore her, he didn't believe in anyone's existence.
Except for when she goes to see his painting, Amy sneezes and he hands her a tissue. Now think, Oliver still has manners to hand someone a tissue and tell someone bless you. 'Yeah but Britney!!!!! Those are no reasons to ship them!!!!!!!!!!'
But he continues to talk to her. Oliver is acknowledging Amy, even though he believes the nothing fabricated these people. According to his foster father, he didn't acknowledge anyone after the incident with his parents.
Let that sink in for a few seconds.
So, she begins to take it deeper in, asking him questions and they talk about the nothing. Oliver gets deep and talks about how the nothing, how people deny it's existence but how it will always be there. He openly talks about how his theory that the entire world may be a bedtime story and how their existences aren't real.
So, Amy comforts Oliver by telling him she's real, like everyone else. But he sternly asks her to prove it. She grabs a marker from the supply cabinet and draws a smiley face on his palm.
You don't understand how much this means to me if you've never read Spaceboy in your entire life. Amy and Jemmah had a little sign 30 years ago where they'd stick their tongues out at each other.
'But Britney!!1!1!1! What does thus have to do with anything???1?1?1?"
She's asking him to become her friend, and be best friends forever.
Soon, he realizes the sign on his palm and they introduce themselves to each other. Amy and Oliver interact more, until she asks him to help her with an idea since she can't draw.
So she goes over and they get into a little fight involving art, skipping all that. After Amy leaves, Oliver's foster father tells him to stop talking and hanging out with Amy.
And to lie to her.
This is Oliver's beserk button.
He yells at him and walks in the rain calling for her, luckily he finds her splashing through rain puddles.
So, he notices these people his dad works for, (?) Telling Oliver to stop interacting with her or they will end her life and relocate him.
He chooses to no longer interact with her, its those little things that form a ship. Those little things they do that bring two characters together.
This ship will sail.
