I woke up in a cold sweat. The curtains on my window were drawn, only allowing a sliver of sunlight. I rolled over in the small twin bed, burying my head into the mound of pillows.
*You can't escape.*
I jerked upright. The voice from my dream echoing through my mind. I looked warily orotund the room, already knowing that I would not see anything besides the still unpacked boxes littered around the room.
"Gwynn, get your lazy ass out of bed. If you miss this first day. . . Night of school, so help me God." My mother yelled from downstairs. I sighed, crawling out of the warm bed. Avoiding the boxes I made my way to the small bathroom.
This was the sixth school in the past four months. I didn't see the point of going to school anymore, it wasn't like I'd even be here long enough to actually make any friend sor learn anything useful. Each and every school I went to had a different curriculum and was always in a different spot from the last school I had attended.
Besides that, I couldn't even recall the last time I had had a legit friend. Scratch that, I couldn't remember the last time I had a real conversation with someone my own age. My mothers obsession with constantly moving was getting real old.
"Guinevere!" She hollered.
"Jesus Christ, mom. I'm up and getting ready." I yelled back as I pulled n my white cardigan. I could hear her grumbling in the kitchen as I made my way down the stairs.
"Ungrateful child. She needs to learn some respect. I'm here mother dammit. I didn't throw away the past eighteen years of my life to raise an ingrate."
I felt a sharp pain in my chest. I already knew how much my mother despised my existence. I had caused her to start her drinking. My hand crept up to rub the white scar on my arm, caused during one of my mothers drunken stupors.
She had turned her head as I grabbed my messenger bag off of the table, a look of disgust in her eyes. "It's your fault your father left. The second you were born, he knew what a disgusting thing you were and he left me the minute he could. If I had known better, I would have abandoned you on the streets like the trash you are." She sneered, her words slurred, and the scent of alcohol drifting towards me. "Get the hell out of my house and get your ass to school."
I bowed my head, not wanting to get into a fight. She had started her drinking early today. I made my way into the oncoming twilight.
Full night had fallen. I had made the three mile trek in twenty minutes. As I made my way towards the school, I couldn't help but stop and stare. It was located a mile away from the main road, deep in the woods.
It stood like a medieval castle. Tall, elegant, and gothically beautiful. It reminded me of Hogwarts. They way the lights twinkled from the thousands of windows. Yet, this was what was real, not some made up place in a children's book. I was startled out of my reverie by a limo driving beside me. The windows were too dark to see who was inside. But I could feel the stares from the passengers inside.
I made my way into the school. Avoiding the stares of the other students. They all wore matching uniforms. Navy blue skirts or trousers, white button up shirts, and matching sweaters, blazers, jackets, and ties. On each lapel was the schools emblem. A crescent moon with crossed swords.
Walking down the main hallway I could hear the whispers of the students.
"Who is* she?"
"I didn't know we let their* kind here."
I ducked my head, trying to ignore the whispers. I quickly stepped into the main office. Noticing right away that it was empty. Not a soul in sight. The main desk stood to the right, an ancient looking computer sat atop it, a golden bell sitting beside.
I looked around the room. Still no one. I took a deep breath in and hit the bell. I waited. And waited. I cringed as the door behind the desk was shoved open.
The guy who walked through stopped dead in his tracks. His brows furrowed as he stared at me. I had my arms crossed over my stomach, almost afraid that he would yell or hit me. The only time I ever heard doors being slammed open was when my mother was drunk and was looking to give me a beating.
I looked up through my lashes to his eyes. I was mesmerized. He had blue eyes, with a violet ring around his pupil. I had never seen eyes like those before. They were so. . . abnormal.
"I didn't mean to frighten you, love." He said taking a step closer to me. I looked away from his eyes to his outstretched hand. Trying to ignore how incredibly attractive his british accent sounded.
"U-um I-I just here for my class schedule, and I guess my uh uniform?" I took a step away from him, planting my back against the wall near the door.
"Right, you must be Miss Guinevere Larke. Just moved to town, am I correct?" He asked, walking to the filing cabinet on his left.
"Yeah. Yes, that's me. You are?" I asked politely.
"Adrian. Adrian Thorne." He said turning around with a piece of paper in his hand. "Here is your schedule." He glanced down before passing it to me. "And it seems that I am in all of your classes."
As I grabbed the paper from his outstretched hand, my fingers brushed the tips of his. It was as if I had been electrocuted. The hair on the back of my neck stood on end. I held my crumpled schedule to my chest, silently nursing the shocked hand.
Adrian looked at me as if I were an alien. A specimen that had never before been seen on our planet. His brown hair fell softly above his eyes, and I had a sudden urge to run my finger through it.
"I-I'm sorry." I said quickly. I didn't really have any experience with people. I normally tried to avoid them. I didn't want to anger them in any way. I knew what the result of anger was all too well.
"There's no need to apologize, Guinevere. It was just static electricity. See?" He said holding up his hand. "No burns, no lasting scars."
I looked at the ground. Not knowing what to really say. I nodded my head, I didn't want him to get angry about me not replying.
"If you'd like Miss Guinevere I could show you around the school and to your classes. I'll just have to check in with Mrs. Kelley, the secretary, to let her know I'm finished up." He flashed me a small reassuring smile. His teeth an almost unnatural white.
"Oh, no. I wouldn't want to be a burden." I said hastily.
"Guinevere, a beauty such as yourself could never be a burden. Just wait here a moment, I'll be right back." He left back through the door he entered.
My hand crept down to rub my right thigh. I don't want to attract too much attention to myself. Especially from someone who looks to be like they might be in the 'in' crowd. My fingers started to tap out a beat on my pants, distracting me from my surroundings. Getting lost in the beat I began to hum to myself. Lost in the music I had created, I almost fainted when I felt the same shock from before race up my arm.
I opened my eyes and looked down at my hand. Clasped around it was a slim pale one. I looked up to see Adrian's concerned face. His brows were furrowed and the violet in his eyes had darkened to black, making the look blue a hard azure.
I closed my eyes tightly. Had I somehow offended him? Were students not allowed to make music? I waited quietly for him to yell or hit me. But none of that came.
"Gwynn." He said softly, placing his fingers under my chin and lifting my face. "I'm not going to hurt you." I opened my eyes to see that his eyes had softened. "You are so jumpy, and scared. Why?"
I pulled my hand out of his, and rubbed my thigh vigorously. "It's nothing. Can you just show me to class."I asked turning towards the door. "Please." I added.
"Of course. Follow me."
And with that, Adrian led me into the unknown.
