“Shhh, Cassie it’s just me.” His hoarse voice whispered in my ear.
My eyes widened. What’s he doing in my room? His hand dropped to his side and I turned around to come face to face with him.
“What the frick Evan?!” I whisper yelled, he just burst out in laughter to which I crossed my arms over my chest and waited for him impatiently.
“Y-your f-ace!” he managed to say between the cackles. I raised my eyebrows. He clearly thinks this is funny.
“Jerk” I mumbled, looking away from him.
“Aww Cassie don’t be mad,” he begged, controlling his laughter and scratching the back of his head. “I came here to cheer you up.” he admitted.
“Well scaring me isn’t going to cheer me up. Besides I don’t need cheering up, I’m perfectly fine.”
“That’s a lie.”
“What?” I asked my eyebrows rising even higher.
“You do need cheering up. I can see your hurt, confused and scared. I see it in your eyes. Don’t forget I’ve known you since we were like 12, you’re like a little sister.” When he said that all my anger washed away.
He actually could tell that I was in pain. How did he know? I learnt how to mask my feelings ages ago, hide them and sometimes even control them. But feelings are hard to control. All they want to do if run free and all I want then to do is stay put. I’ve been trying to be strong for my family. Could you imagine how much worse things would be if I were moping around the house all day? It would make mum feel even worse. Then it might make her weaker and sicker.
I read a book about a family with a family member that had cancer. The name of the book was ‘My sisters keeper’. In the book the family was broken. They were a mess. I don’t want that to happen to my family.
I wish I could be happy, with out a worry in the world. But life isn’t that simple is it? It’s full of challenges. Something will knock us down but we have to find the strength to get back up even if we want to stay there and lay flat on our face. We would never achieve anything in life if we didn’t continue battling.
“Come on. I want to show you something.” Evan said, breaking my train of thought.
Absent-mindedly I followed Evan down to the garage where his car was. When he jumped in the car and turned the engine on I hesitated. Should I just drive away with him? Where would he take me? Is it dangerous?
Ah what the heck? Its one drive, what do I have to loose? I dropped into the soft leather seats and slammed the door shut. Evan revved the car once then speed out in the streets. The dim streetlights lit up the road allowing us to see the outline of the houses that flashed past.
An hour later we stopped at a beach. I stepped out of the car and gasped at the sight in front of me. I had never been to the beach at night. It was beautiful. I slipped my shoes off and felt the soft sand beneath my feet and in between my toes. I walked to the shore and sat down.
The sea glinted under the moons light. I listen to the waves crash against the rocks; it was like a calming melody. The cold nights breeze loomed around me. I saw the streetlights and city lights glimmer in the distance. The lights were so small it looked like glitter shining. I took a deep breath, inhaling the salty beach scent. I could hear seagulls chirp in the nearby trees. It was like I could just relax. The beauty distracted my mind and I forgot about all the horrible things. I forgot there was a whole world out there, while I was in this soothing place where my sprits are being lifted up there are people causing chaos out there. I sighed, letting my gaze drift up to the sky that was filled with hundreds and thousands of stars. I’m glad for just this once I was the person that was truly happy for once. But I knew it wasn’t going to last.
