For twenty minutes I wandered around the shop looking for any sign of life. I came up short. Walking back up to the front, with the little kitten still in my arms, I found someone trying to reattach the bell to the door.

Reassured that I wasn't in a terrible nightmare, I began to walk faster. It was her.

After days of waiting around, finally I could have my second chance with her. I could redeem myself.

"You are not a socially awkward mouth-breather", I repeated in my head as I got closer. "You can do this, just talk to her".

As I was beginning to approach her, she finally noticed me and spoke. "Is this your bookstore? I'm so sorry about what happened. I love this place, I'm so glad it survived!"

What was she talking about? Survived what? "Why would this be my bookstore?" I was beyond confused.

"Because you're the only one here."

I looked up, my mind only getting foggier. Did I say that out loud? "What's going on? I don't understand. I fell asleep waiting for...." I questioned, trailing off before I completely buried myself.

"Waiting for what?" She was starting to look as confused as I was.

"Oh nothing. Anyway, I fell asleep here earlier and when I woke up everyone was gone. Can you please tell me what's happening? You're starting to freak me out."

"Meoooow." A soft meow came from my chest and I realized I still had the kitten with me. The girl's eyes dilated like saucers when she noticed the sweet animal in my arms.

"Who is this cute little guy?" She squealed. Her expression was one of awe and love; I could only hope that one day she'd look at me like that.

I explained to her that he was here when I woke up, but before I could even finished she'd reached out for him. I slowly released him into her small hands, gently brushing my fingers across hers.

When our fingers touched I felt my anxiety filter out of me, this was my moment and I was not going to lose it. "My name is Rhys, by the way", I spoke quietly, "Rhys Mackabee".

She gave me a bright smile, eyes twinkling and a flush of red painting her cheeks. It was like looking at a one-of-a-kind watercolor painting. "I'm Cadence", she said, briefly making eye contact with me and then returning her attention to the kitten.

Moments passed before I realized that she still hadn't told me what happened. "Hey, Cadence. Could you tell me what happened? Is everything okay?"

"A tornado ripped through town about an hour ago."
