Evangeline came to the conclusion that she was in deep shit. She realized this the moment Maria began undressing. Her face began to heat up, signifying a blush coming along. Eva couldn't help but stare longingly at Maria's torso as she slid a lavender colored shirt over her head, it soon falling over her bra clad chest obscuring her breasts from Eva's vision. She sighed, hating herself for seeing her best friend this way. Eva kicked off her shoes and threw herself onto Maria's bed, letting out an exasperated breath upon impact."Que tienes sus bragas in a twist?" Maria asked as she slipped her skirt off and pulled on a pair of black spandex shorts from cheer leading, her native language slipping past her lips in combination with the language she'd been taught to speak in public.
Eva groaned, the sound being muffled by the white and lavender comforter. She loved it when Maria spoke Spanish. It made her heart race, her desire for the young Latina only increasing. Eva remembered the times when Maria would stumble over certain English words, her frustration causing her to abandon the word completely and just say it in Spanish. Eva would laugh and then sit the girl down and help her pronounce the word. Eva remembered being younger, watching Maria's mouth form the words she struggled so hard to pronounce, often finding herself dampening her own. Maybe that should have been a sign for her turning out to be the way she is now.
"Nada chica. Just tired is all." Eva replied, lifting her read and turning on her side to gaze at the now sitting teenager. After having spent almost her entire life with the Vasquez's, Eva picked up a few things, however, she was not fluent in the language like Maria. French being her native tongue spoken at home.
"Well, you can sleep when we've finished the project." Maria stated, getting up to retrieve the large cardboard which held two weeks of research, a pink background, and clusters of glitter (much to Eva's discretion). Eva groaned once again but sat up reluctantly sat up.
"Remind me why I have this class again." Eva mumbled as she reached over and grabbed her bag from the floor. She pulled out a navy blue folder that held their report and began putting the papers in order.
"Because you need it to graduate and because I'm in this class. Also, because you love me."
"More than you know." Eva mumbled.
"What?"
"What?"
"What did you just say?"
"Nothing. I was just reading over our introduction." Eva lied quickly.
"This is my problem with you. You're always mumbling under your breath and acting weird."
Eva sighed. She hadn't realized she'd been allowing her feelings to slip through. Setting the papers on the nightstand, she pushed the cardboard away, leaning over and snatching the green construction paper and scissors out of Maria's hands.
"What're you doing!? I'm trying to finish this project!" Maria exclaimed, a pout settled on her plump lips. Eva clicked her tongue and crawled over to her, a smile on her face.
"And I'm trying to apologize." Eva replied. She pulled the girl into her chest, wrapping her arms around her shoulders and breathing in the Latina's coconut scented hair. A moment of silence passed before Eva spoke.
"I'm sorry. I've just been really stressed lately and it seems I've been taking it out on you." Eva says, her words being half true. Yes, Eva was stressed, but the cause of her stress was sitting wrapped in her arms; completely unaware of the effect she had on the French girl. Maria huffed before accepting the girl's apology. They sat in silence for another five minutes.
"You're not still mad right?"
Maria shook her head.
"I would like a verbal answer."
"No."
"That doesn't sound like someone who isn't angry."
Maria grunted in response.
"Guess I'll just have to bring out el monstruo de las cosquillas." Eva sang out, flexing her fingers. Maria gasped and tried to sit up but Eva tightened her grip around the 17 year old. Maria glared up at Eva.
"No lo haga, Eva." Eva only smirked in return, attacking Maria's sides. Her body jolted in reaction as she tried to slither out of Eva's grip, failing miserably. Eva pushed Maria onto her back and sat on her hips, hands furiously attacking her sides and they both let out wondrous laughter. Maria's uncontainable giggles slipped through her lips, putting Eva in a trance. She stared in awe, wondering how someone could be so beautiful. With throbbing fingers, Eva's right hand hovered over Maria's left cheek. The French girl leaned in slowly, the temptation of the other girl's lips beginning to cloud her mind. Maria's laughter had died down by now, confused as to what her best friend's next move was.
"What are you doing?" She asked.
Eva stopped.
What am I doing?
She cleared her throat, eyes searching Maria's face, looking everywhere but her eyes. Eva slowly swiped her thumb over her eye lid, Maria's eyes fluttering closed. Eva studied her features for the short five seconds that her eyes were closed, just as she had done a million times before. She admired the way her eyelashes brushed her rosy cheeks. How her eyebrows were perfectly swept in opposite directions. The way her plump pink lips were still curved up into a soft smile. Eva admired it all.
"There was an eyelash on your eye." Eva replied before sighing and climbing off Maria.
"Oh, thanks." Maria said, utterly confused. Eva picked up the forgotten construction paper.
"I think we should finish this project." She muttered, eyes focused on cutting it up.
"Yeah... We should."*********
Together they finished the project, a couple of jokes thrown in after the long awkward silence. It was 7pm, and the late October Sky began to darken.
"So I'll see you tomorrow, right?" Eva shrugged, pulling her messenger bag higher up her shoulder.
"Depends on if I feel like getting up tomorrow." Maria chuckled and smacked her shoulder.
"You better get your ass up tomorrow or so help me I will come to your house and drag you out of your bed. Plus, I want you to be there when Dylan asks me out." Maria uttered, grin as wide as the Cheshire cat's. Eva rolled her eyes.
Dylan.
He was a boy in their grade who obviously had a crush on the Colombian girl, and vice versa. Everyone could see it. But not everyone was happy about it. Especially not Evangeline. Eva could admit that he was good looking, but something about him just threw her off. She didn't know what it was, but it bothered her to her core.
"I still don't get why you don't like him." Maria says, noticing the attitude Eva was giving.
"I don't know, there's just something about him that sends shivers down my spine. I get bad vibes from him."
Also, he's trying to steal away the love of my life.
"Yeah yeah yeah. Get home safe kid. I'll call you in the morning." Maria leaned over and stood on her tip-toes, kissing Eva on the corner of her mouth. Eva stumbled back in a daze, cheeks flaring up in a bright blush.
"Good night Eva. Be safe."
Y-yeah...g-goodnight Mary." Maria softly shut the front door, the clicking of the lock waking Eva from her daze.
Did she just...?
Eva shook her head and made her way home. She greeted her family, eating dinner and telling them about her day. She then took a shower and got into bed, snuggling under the white cushioned duvet. She reached up and touched where Maria's lips had once been. A smile graced her lips as she fell into slumber, thoughts of Maria clouding her brain._______________
