Chapter 2: Departure
Not going to school and also being allowed outside the house was so weird. I'm not used to having to stay out of school at all. I got up in the mornings, having to shut my blinds, because the sun is oddly too bright. It feels as though someone is shining a football field light directly into my window when I wake up in the mornings. It's difficult to even get up in the mornings. I was officially let out of school the day I woke up in the hospital. Apparently Elysian House's school schedule begins in mid-winter. Winter is the time for the Vampires. During summer, summer nights are supposedly a lot better when you're a member of the undead.
Speaking of the "undead", I'm not dead. The stereotype of Vampires being dead was totally false. I realized this when I remembered hearing about that stereotype from Ezekiel, who just found out I was going to be going to Elysian House. I was still warm and my blood was still flowing. My heart beated just like normal. The only changes to my body that I've discovered is the unnaturally pale complexion and my onyx eyes. My eyes before were blue. Just a plain blue. When I looked in the mirror again, I looked completely different.
I've always described my looks as not ugly, but not gorgeous either. Just in between. Brown hair, blue eyes, olive skin. My nose was long, my cheekbones were high. When I looked in the mirror, I was satisfied. Of course, I have days when I'm insecure, but for the majority, I think I'm okay.
But when I looked in the mirror after the change, I found I didn't recognize myself. My brown hair had gone significantly more darker. My eyes, which I've described before, seemed to have lost any light and have gone entirely black. My skin, which was always olive colored and dotted with freckles, was now smooth and pale.
Two weeks have passed since I have undergone the transition from human to Vampire. The school discharged me and I would be beginning school in Elysian House when winter break starts. Which was tomorrow. Today was the last day for school for the kids in Sacred Heart.
My dad has taken me out for my final day in the human world. We went through the city, enjoying ourselves, eating out and going to the old arcade we used to go to when I was a kid. I enjoyed the day, I hadn't hung out with my old man in ages. It was refreshing to go out. Despite the blaring sun from the sky, of course.
I lived in California. So the lowest temperature we get is around 68 degrees. So winter break was more like a spring break. At least in regards to weather.
Luckily for me, California was quite a popular place for tourists and vacationers. It's a popular state, overall. And because I lived in San Francisco, I lived in one of the most popular cities. Elysian House wasn't in the city though.
Vampires weren't uncommon. I'd actually known a guy who was chosen to go to Elysian House. And unlike what most people think, Vampires aren't secrets to the world.
Vampires were very much real and they were just like anyone else. And now that I'm one, I can say that I know for sure that Vampires are seriously not that different. I'm tired more often and the sun is kind of annoying. But other than that, I can't say I feel much different.
My dad and I are currently sitting in the corner steak house. I'm sitting
across from him, chewing on my straw as I check my phone for any messages."I can't believe you're a Vampire," my dad says and I look over the rim of my dark shades at him. "My baby. My baby girl's a Vampire."
"Does it bug you?" I ask him and I'm serious. I'm glad my parents are so understanding and great, because some parents aren't okay with their kids being Vampires. It's almost just as bad as being gay to some people.
He shrugs his shoulder. "It bugs me only because you're going to be living away from us. And you'll have, like, super powers."
I grin from ear to ear, at my typical dad's silliness. "I don't have super powers. I don't feel any different."
