Chapter 10: Nebulous
Maya jaw unhinged. "What?"
I nod my head, not surprised by her shocked reaction to my previous statement. "It's true."
She drops down at the desk beside mine, jaw still not closed up. "She..."
"Confucius is gone," I supply for her.
This morning, I had gone straight to her classroom. Only to find a substitute. The woman didn't really say much about where Confucius went off to. Only that she'd be gone for a while. Which wasn't good for Bradley, Maya and I.
Maya turns in the seat to face the desk, hands lacing through each other. "What the hell are we supposed to do now?"
I shrugged my shoulders as a response.
To make matters even worse, I see a certain white-haired female walk into the room. I instantly look down at my desk, not wanting to make eye contact with her. After I'd found her kissing that girl in that place, I decided it was best for me to just stay away from Olivia. Obviously, she only had one motive with me. And that was probably to get in my pants. Which I wasn't exactly okay with.
Olivia was seated a few seats ahead of mine. She didn't turn around to look at me and for that, I was thankful.
"Well, that plan is out of the way. What do we have left?"
"I guess," I sigh, trying to distract myself from the girl sitting up ahead of me, "we can do what Bradley suggested."
"Look?"
"Yeah. I mean, I know there are a lot of places to check, but it can't hurt to at least try."
"Riley, I don't know. I mean, even if we did find something, are we sure we even want to look? I mean, the place is a tomb."
"I have to see."
She nods, but doesn't seem very excited about trying to find it. I don't blame her.
After class, Maya and I head into the school canteen. Next hour, I'd be seated next to Olivia, and I wasn't looking forward to that. But I'd try to forget about it for now, because to be frank, I just wanted to have a normal school year. But so far, it's shaping up to be anything but.
We had come out of the kitchen area when I feel someone's eyes on me. I turn to look and find three white-haired people walking toward us. The one in toe being Klark, the asshole. They stop in front of us, blocking our way to our seats and Maya shrinks behind me.
"So," Klark begins, not looking nearly as tough and in charge as the first time I had a run-in with him. "I hear that you and Olivia went out on a date."
"Yeah, and according to her, she's real sad about it too," the girl on his hip pipes in. It wasn't Jenna.
"What the fuck did you do?" The third one, a mousy-looking guy asks. He wasn't very intimidating, but all three of them put together could sure kick my ass.
Maya grabs my arm from behind me, clearly frightened of them. I hadn't forgotten her fear of these guys. I reach back and grab her hand, trying to squeeze it for support.
"Well?" The girl demands when I don't speak.
"I don't think it's any of your business," besides, why the hell is she sad about anything? I'm the one that's upset here.
Klark's eyes light up with fire and he takes a step toward me. "Just 'cause you're a girl, doesn't mean I won't hurt you."
"And just 'cause you're a guy, doesn't mean I won't aim for the place in between your legs." I answer back, taking my own step toward him.
