Chapter 33: Long Road Ahead
Regret is like an entity. Something that lives, always nearby, always talking in your ear. And it feels like no matter how small the action was to conjure the regret, the regret is not small, it's never small. For some reason, nobody seems to realize what a great force it is. How powerful it can be.
But there's one person I believe knows the feeling well, and that person is Jasmin.
On the way back home from Kenai, after expelling the Darkness from her, and then losing it, I could see her hunched over position. She still shivered and shook, despite her being out of the snow, however, I had a belief that it wasn't the snow that had her quaking. The intense emotion in her eyes was almost too unbearable.
It all came into question now. Elpis Zoe, the Queen of the Night, greatest threat to mankind and Vampires, reduced to a drug addict. And now, here she is again, in the form of a nineteen year old girl, who's already done some unspeakable things.
Yes, I do think Jasmin has learned quite a bit about regret, if her past life and this one is anything to go by.
As soon as the plane lands, and we were stepping off, a group of men dressed in black suits came walking forward. Judging by their abnormally colored eyes, they were Vampires. Winter steps forward, with an arched brow. "Yes?"
"Winter Horux?" One of them asks and we could hear his accent. He pulls out a badge and shows it to Winter, a badge to signify he was with the Italian Vampiric government. "Snow has learned of the Queen of the Night's upcoming. We've gathered intel that says you have her."
Olivia steps in front of Jasmin and gives me a wary look. This definitely didn't seem good.
Winter straightens her back, jaw getting tight. "What does my sister want with the Queen?"
"That is classified, miss. Do you have her or not?"
There is a brief pause where the pair are just staring at each other and in front of me, I can see Del placing her hand on her weapon, which makes me even more nervous.
When it feels like this silence will never end, Winter says, "No, we don't. We killed her in Kenai, Alaska. And the Darkness got away when we did."
His jaw clenches and his eyes lift up to the rest of us, obviously trying to see if he could detect the Queen. Jasmin must have been hidden well, because he couldn't see her and looks back down at Winter. "Very well. Have a good day, ma'am."
"That can't be good," Bradley says quietly, only meant for our ears.
"Indeed, it's not," Winter keeps walking, carrying her bag on her shoulder. She looks back at Viola, who's got a hold on Red Knight as they walk. "Make sure you keep his head down. When they realize he's a Rogue, we'll be in even more trouble than we already are."
"We won't let them take anyone," Viola says with determination. She pulls Red Knight's head down and whispers, "Just keep silent, okay?"
As soon as we're outside, Winter turns to Viola and I. "You need to take him to the Prisoner Unit we have here in the city." She reaches into her jacket pocket and hands over a keycard to me. "Use this to get past the authority. Tell them you'll need a temporary cell, when he's locked up, come find me at the Tower. Del, take Skylar, Bradley and Maya to Elysian House. Allow them to settle in, I'll be borrowing Ms. Jackson for the rest of the night."
"Immediately, ma'am," Del confirms, she already has her phone out and ready.
"What about Jasmin?" Olivia asked with her arm wrapped around Jasmin's waist. Jasmin was still tightly bound in a heavy coat, and she was shivering. Even in the California heat, she looked freezing.
