Desiree slowly opened her eyes and looked around her.
The light was blinding, her head was pounding and nothing seemed right with the world.
She looked to the right and saw her mother gently gripping her hand while enjoying a peaceful slumber on a white chair.
How long have I been here?, she quietly wondered to herself.
She tried to recollect her thoughts and memories. Then it hit her like a ton of bricks.
She had been in a car accident with her best friends.
"Mom, mom," Desiree worriedly muttered, desperately shaking her mother's hand to wake her up.
"Oh my God. You're awake Desiree. Thank God. Never scare me like that again," Casey said, quickly waking up after hearing the sound of her daughter's voice.
"I know, I know. I'm ok. Where are the rest of the girls?"
"Desiree, you were very lucky to make it out alive. You sustained a few injuries, but that's not the case with everyone. All of you girls are going to be ok, except for Destiny," Casey replied, trying her best to hold back the tears.
"What do you mean? I don't understand. Let me go see her right now."
"You will get to see her honey. She's only two rooms down. We just can't see her right now. The doctors need to check up on you really quickly. Then we will go see her. I promise."
"Is she going to be ok?"
"No honey, she isn't, but I promise that I will not let you leave this hospital without saying goodbye to her."
"She can't die mom, she just can't," Desiree quietly said, crying into her mother's shoulder.
"It's not your fault Desiree. She was driving so she was the most affected. It's the fault of the guy who was driving without a license. You can still see her though. The doctors just don't think she's going to last much longer."
With those words, both mother and daughter broke down in tears. They wrapped their arms around each other and cried freely, forgetting for a brief moment every argument they had ever had and comforting each other.
