When a person dies and no one will miss them, the mourning is assigned to a random human. This is why you sometimes just feel sad.WTNV

Things went pretty smoothly after that. I retrieved the discarded gun from the floor and put it back on its holster. I gave an still slightly distressed Jake instructions not to leave the house, and locked it; just in case. I was now driving my way to town, on a food run, debating whether or not to ask Reginald for help. This ugly-ass-named individual was one of the vamps in town. No one important, really, not in the vampire hierarchy, but just on the right position to work with me from time to time.
Vampires, in general, were not very high up in the food chain. I personally had always thought their greatest accomplishment to date had been the image they'd crafted themselves to be to humans. Most other supernatural creatures knew the true nature of vampires, and didn't hold them in very high esteem. They had, after all, a lot of weaknesses, the most notable their aversion towards the sun. The only other creatures to burn like that in sunlight were lesser demons and some specific kind of fairies. Humans, however, had an idolized image of vampires, to the point of often offering themselves as snacks for the bloodsuckers. I always thought that was very smart marketing. Whatever others thought about them they'd ensured themselves an steady stream of food, that usually came to them willingly; and the only price they'd payed was to be a bit more known amongst the living than the run of the mill monster.
The fact that they were so notorious in the human world though, along with their huge ass egos, had eventually made them outcasts within the supernaturals, and thus perfect for me to work with.
Making Reg aware of Jake's existence, however, was not a tempting option. If I didn't tell him, he'd obviously question what I needed a brain for, or why I'd need help hunting for food; so in the end I deemed it best not to involve him.
That still left me needing to find something for Jake to eat. It had to be someone nobody would miss; I couldn't risk the police getting involved now. To make matters worse, it was already morning, and skulking around dark alleys looking for some poor sod to stumble drunkenly on me was not an option.
I looked up into the sky and bitterly realized this was going to be one of those way too sunny days. Even with my sunglasses on my eyes still bothered me, so I decided to go into a nearby mall and start there.
I stalked the place for a while, until I found someone suitable; a thin, sickly looking drug addict. He wore shades and a hoodie even in this weather, probably to hide the marks on his arms. But I had seen him before and knew he frequented one of the clubs in the area, and often spent most of his nights looking for a fix from the local dealers. All this would make him easy to kidnap without anyone noticing. The few people who knew him would just guess he'd died on a ditch somewhere and wouldn't bother looking for him. What really sweetened the pot was the fact that this particular junkie was also a scumbag. It hadn't been long since I'd stumbled upon him beating a hooker bloody while in one of my hunts. He was the perfect target.
I waited 'till he had paid for whatever it was he was here to get and approached him in the parking lot, just as he was leaving. Making sure no one was looking in our direction I jumped him from behind and broke his neck, supporting his weight even as he slumped in my arms. I quickly got him to my car and threw him in the trunk, happy to have wrapped this up so quickly. I was ready to go home and get a very deserved nap.
