++++ MICHAEL ++++
Bang. Dad falls in the field in front of the truck. I open the door to jump out.
"Michael?" Laelynn shakes me and I wake up.
"Yeah?" I groan.
"You were dreaming again."
"I was? I haven't done that in..." I remember the dream and stop. I was dreaming about when Dad died. "What's today?"
"May 15th." She chokes. That's why. It's been 6 years. I remember the conversation we had at his funeral. She looks so different now. Her wavy, light brown hair is pulled back into a braid like Anna's always is, and she doesn't look so child-like anymore.
"Is this the annual 'he dreamt' party?" Eleise says, walking into the room. She and Laelynn looked alike when we were younger, but now they look like twins. Most people can only tell them apart because Eleise is slightly taller, but it's not that hard for me since I'm their brother.
"Yes. Have you seen Anna this morning?" I ask.
"She's at the spot again."
"Why did I even ask?"
"We need to build her a bench out there." Laelynn laughs.
We leave and head out to the creek. Anna always sits out on the bank, where we were before the man came back, and stares at the spot where Dad had stood. She went out there everyday after his funeral for two months.
"Hi." Laelynn says quietly and we all sit down with Anna. There's this sense of loss in the air.
When Dad died, Anna was 16. She was lost and hurting, and Dad dying didn't really help. Now 22, she's found her old self again somewhere along the way, but this part of then still remains. I was 15, and I've never really coped with the pain. I had to stay strong for them, since Dad was gone. You can tell that I've never dealt with it because I haven't gotten rid of the dreams on the bad days, like today.
"Hey. I thought I'd find the Versi's out here." John comes and sits between Anna and me.
"Yeah." Anna says.
"Well, I thought I'd brighten up the occasion."
"With what?"
"Well... times like these bring to mind the fact that life is... short." I smile. I had completely forgotten about John telling me he was going to propose. "So... it might be brightened up with... Hmm. Help me, Mrs. Versi."
"A proposal? Is that the word?" Mom laughs as she climbs up the bank from the cove.
"Yes, that's it! Thank you." John's grinning ear to ear. "A proposal, to brighten up the occasion, Ms. Anna."
"Oh, John! Absolutely! But don't call me that!" She laughs as John slips a ring on her finger. "Call me your fiance."
