Emma's POV 5 years old
School was over. I was kind of sad because now I had to go back home and home wasn't very fun. A few moments later Charlie came to join me at my cubby so we could walk to the bus together. "Come on slow poke, Mike's going to leave without us" She said trying to rush me.
"He won't leave without us" I said putting my bag on back. We walked out of our school and headed to the school bus. I got on and Mike smiled at me. I smiled back and sat down in my usual spot beside Charlie.
"What do you want to be when you're older?" Charlie blurted out
"I don't know. What do you want to be?" I asked looking into her blue eyes.
"I want to be a doctor! So then when someone is hurt I will help them be all better again." She said with a huge smile. "Except I won't help Tyler get better he's soooooo annoying. " She said looking behind her looking for Tyler.
"Yea I guess he's pretty annoying" I said looking at him. He had short brown hair and hazel colored eye's, he was wearing a shirt with a superman logo on it. I looked back at Charlie and she was about to get off the bus and then I said "Bye Charlie see ya tomorrow!" She waved and got off the bus.
The whole way to my stop I stared out the window until I was the last one on the bus. "How bout' I bring you some breakfast tomorrow?" Mike asked looking at me threw the mirror of the bus.
"Yes please!" I almost yelled
"Chocolate chip muffin?" Mike asked. "Mhm" I responded.
Mike dropped me off at my stop and I got off the bus. "See you tomorrow. Thanks for the necklace I love it." He nodded and left. As I was walking home I stuffed my necklace into my shirt so my parents wouldn't notice it. I knew if dad would notice it he would probably yell at me. I took my bracelet and stuffed it in my bag. I had a tiny secret pocket in it and put it there.
I finally got home and opened the door. The house reeked with the smell of cigarettes. I saw mom in the kitchen smoking again, I looked over to where my dad's chair was. He was still in the exact same position from this morning but this time awake with a beer in his hands. I rushed to my room as quickly as I could so my parents wouldn't notice me. But as soon as I got to my room I heard my dad yell out my name. I walked out and stood beside him at his chair.
"Where do you think you're going young lady" He said slowly turning around to look at me.
"I was going to my room to do my homework" I said barely over a whisper. He was now facing me. He got up and I flinched.
"What's that around your neck?" He asked coming closer to my face. I looked down at my neck and my new necklace was showing a bit. He took it and ripped it off my neck. He threw it across the room. "Who gave you that?" He asked angrily.
"My friend" I said almost crying. "Why" He asked
"Cause it's my birthday today..." I said looking down at my feet. The floor beneath me was filthy, there was dirt and beer cans everywhere. The whole house was like that though. The walls were also always dirty and some of our windows had wooden planks over them.
"Oh so it is? Well happy fucking birthday! You want your birthday gift here it is!!" He yelled at me hitting me in the face. I started to cry instantly, I ran to my room and locked the door. I was too scared to go back out there.
This was the worst birthday ever. That night I fell asleep crying and hugging the only teddy bear I had. It was from Mike, he got it for me for when I was felling sad.
The next day I woke up to the sound of a rooster. As usual I was the only one who got up. I changed into a new pair of clothes. I was still scared to come out of my room but I had to be brave. I walked out of my room and went to the bathroom. I looked into the mirror and saw that my eye was black. I ignored it and walked to the living room. Dad wasn't there though, I searched the filthy ground to try and find my necklace. When I finally found it I held it tight and left the house to go to my bus stop.
The bus stopped at my stop. I walked into the bus and saw Mike holding a brown paper bag with a huge smile on his face. But that quickly changed, he stopped the bus and looked at me. Sadness filled his eyes. "Emma... What happened...?"
