"Malfoy," Cassius said stiffly. A dark cloud brooded over the boys. Terence's ears had turned bright pink, and Adrian didn't know where to look.
Draco didn't seem to realize that I was sitting in the compartment. "As Flint put me in charge of Quidditch tryouts," he started, getting straight to the point, "I need to know if you boys are going apply this year or not so I can make some... executive decisions. With the exception of Higgs, of course." A smug smirk rested on his face. Terence furrowed his brows and looked down at his lap.
"We're going to make it on the team. You need us," Cassius said confidently. Adrian nodded in agreement.
Draco leaned on the door frame, crossing his lanky arms. "You think that I need you blokes?" He scoffed. "You're graduating! You'll be replaced either now or next year. I don't need you. In fact, I don't think you'll be playing on the team at all this year." He looked incredibly satisfied with himself.
Cassius and Adrian looked furious, but they seemed to be biting their tongues.
"You can't do that," I interjected with a glare, not sure of what I was doing.
For the first time, Draco turned to me, disbelief and resentment carved into his nasty expression. He studied me for a moment, and I struggled against the instinct to turn away from his analytical, electric blue eyes. Finally, he spoke.
"And who are you?"
I blushed furiously before choosing to ignore his question. "Your daddy might be able to buy a new set of brooms," I said, relating to a story I heard about how he wormed his way onto the Quidditch team, "But he can't buy talent." I looked him up and down. "And apparently can't birth it either."
Adrian and Terence gasped, the corners of their mouths upturned. Cassius was cracking up, leaning back in the seat with his arms crossed.
Draco, on the other hand, was shaking with rage.
"My father will hear about this," he seethed. "You'll be expelled before you even reach that dreadful school." He brushed himself off, then glared at me menacingly. "You must be a Mudblood."
With that, he slammed the door shut and stomped away.
I sprang up and slid the door open again to stick my head out. "Yeah, well look at what inbreeding has done to you!" I shouted at his back, only to be responded to with a snarky "Piss off!"
Collapsing back onto the seat, I huffed angrily. Never had I met someone as disrespectful or self-righteous as him.
"I could kiss you right about now," Cassius quietly said, as the other two boys erupted into a fit of hoots and I blushed, feeling the heat creep up to my cheeks. "That was brilliant! I never would've expected that."
"Inbreeding," Adrian cried, clutching his stomach. "You told him that he was a product of inbreeding."
"I'm sure the entire train cart heard," Terence joined in, wiping away tears. "Don't worry, it'll spread like wildfire and he'll never hear the end of it."
I bit my lip. "You don't think he'll really get his father to expel me, right?"
Cassius snorted. "Draco's all bark, no bite. You have nothing to worry about." This settled the butterflies in my stomach a little bit.
"If I'm in Slytherin...If," I said, "I'm going to try out for the team, just to spite him."
"Have you played before?" Terence asked, to which I nodded, refraining from rolling my eyes.
"Mahoutokoro's known for Quidditch," I explained. "I was captain before I left."
Cassius whistled. "What do you play?"
