The game didn't last very long until Stephanie found both children. Looking at the time she said "I am sorry guys it's bedtime now."
"But we want to keep playing." Sasha whined. "I know you do. But if you don't go to bed now you guys won't have the energy to play in the morning."
"Alright." Both kids said with a sigh. "Can you read us a story first?" Reese asked. "Sure I can. What story do you want?" Sasha ran upstairs and came back down with a book. She handed it to Stephanie, who looked at the title. "The Little Mermaid." "Are you both ok with this story?" Stephanie asked holding the book up for Reese to see. Both kids nodded their heads.
Stephanie read the book then walked the kids up to bed. She tucked each one in. "Good Night." She said to each kid. They replied the same. She decided to check on Leland. Opening the door quietly, she peered inside. She saw nothing in the dark room. "Could have sworn there was a night light." She muttered as she walked closer to the crib. Leland was still sound asleep. She carefully checked to see if he was wet or not. Luckily he was dry. She checked his bottle and saw it was still full of water. Smiling Stephanie left the room. She decided she would watch a bit of tv before heading up to bed herself.
Quietly heading back downstairs she walked into the living room. After searching for the remote for a few seconds she sat down on the couch flipping the tv on. She searched the channels until she found a movie. Reading the information she decided to watch the movie.
"Mel you can't do that." She said to the tv. The movie she was watching was "The Decedents" she was enjoying the movie and really into it. She never noticed the shadow that fell across the floor, or the way the temperature suddenly dropped a couple degrees. She didn't pay attention to any of that. Her movie ended, she shut off the tv pitching the living room into total darkness. "Hmm could have sworn I left a light on." She said as she carefully navigated through the darkness and up the stairs. She decided at the top of the stairs to check on Leland once again. The monitor had been quiet the movie but she just wanted to make sure.
Opening up the door she quietly walked in. She was happy to see that he was sound asleep. She smiled at the sleeping baby and walked out the room. She checked each kid as she went to her room.
Finding her pyjamas she changed and laid down. She had partly left her bedroom door open just incase one of the kids needed her. She was soon fast asleep.
--- 3:00 am ---
Stephanie woke up with a start. She could have sworn someone was standing over her however when she opened her eyes there was no one there. The house was very silent and this creeped Stephanie out also. Earlier she could hear the creeks and groans of the house. Now she heard nothing. At least not at first. As she strained her ears for any type of sound she realized she could hear singing. "Hush little baby don't make a sound. Mamma's going to buy you a mocking bird." Stephanie realized it was the same song as earlier in the day. Taking no chances, Stephanie jumped out of bed and went straight to Leland's room. When she opened the door she couldn't believe what she saw. There standing beside the baby's crib was a woman. The woman turned her head "shhh. The baby is sleeping." Then she vanished without another word. Stephanie stood motionless. She could speak or move. Thoughts ran wild as she continued her motionless state. Finally snapping out of her trance she rushed to the baby. Nothing seemed out of place. He was sleeping peacefully still. Sighing Stephanie shook her head and turned to leave. That's when she clearly heard footsteps. Not quiet ones, heavy ones. She listened as the footsteps grew louder, then they stopped. She carefully crept forward till she was just at the edge of the door. She carefully bent down and peeked around the corner. She saw... Nothing. "Strange." She mutter as she stood up.
She looked at the baby once more then closed the door. She turned around...
"Steph I am thirsty." Reese said rubbing his eyes. "Sure kid" Stephanie replied after her mild heart attack. How didn't she hear him come up behind her?{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}
