My Sunshine

Jack and I had been sitting together during break. However, he had lost all his other friends, those bullies. We basically only had each other.

The bullies had started to pick on Jack, too. It was not his fault, really. He never fought back, though. He had been a lot less aggressive and violent. It was as if he never got himself into any trouble ever since that time we went to the principal's office.

As usual, we would walk home together and talk about anything under the sun. And me, being the curious little girl I am, always wanted to know about everything. That was a reason why I knew so much about Jack, but I would want to know more. Every single time.

Apparently Jack's from Ireland, obviously, and he moved here about two years ago. So, he spent two years in elementary school and just came to middle school earlier that year. He's also a year older than me, but we took the same grade.

"Hey, Jack," I asked. Jack hummed and raised an eyebrow at me, signalling me to continue. "Do you know any... songs?"

"Oh, um. Yeah, actually. My mum used to sing this cute song to me when I was younger."

"Cool! Sing it!"

"Wh-what? I... can't remember everything. I only know a little. Also, I can't sing!"

"Yes, you can! Just sing whatever you know! I won't judge you." I smiled.

"Really?" I nodded, still smiling as wide. "Okay then..." His voice trailed off.

"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine.
You make me happy when skies are grey.
You'll never know, dear, how much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away.
Well, that's all I can remember."

"Aww, that's so cute! And I really like your voice," I squealed and muttered the last part. I noticed Jack's cheeks turning redder and he smiled.

"T-thank you," he chuckled. I grabbed Jack's hand, swinging it back and forth.

"Wh... wha-"

"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine..." I started singing.

"You make me happy when skies are grey.
You'll never know, dear, how much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away." We sang in unison.

"Thank you, (Y/N). I... I l-love you. You're my best friend," Jack said with a smile, squeezing my hand slightly.

"Thank you too, Jack. You're the one who talked to me first anyway." I replied. I let go of his hand and pulled him into a hug. I felt Jack's body stiffen at the sudden movement, but he slowly relaxed and hugged back. His hug was warm and tight, and I felt safe.

"You're my best friend," I whispered in his ear. When I pulled away, I noticed the deep blush on Jack's face.

"Come on, we have to go home." I started walking again, but this time with more energy.
