I woke up around 3:00 in the morning. I couldn't sleep because school was starting the next day. School had actually started last week but Casey and I had to help mom with some planning for the funeral which was technically yesterday. It was heartbreaking to see everyone crying, I must be a monster for I did not shed a single tear. I felt like a monster, I just could not muster up any tears even if it was for my father. My dad had tought me how to be strong, to not cry, for emotions show weakness. If I was to cry I would cry in solidarity so no one could see me crash and burn. That is if I could cry, I haven't cried in over two years.
I rolled over to see Casey was awake too. She was looking out the window. Her long, light-purple hair covered with dark looming shadows. Beautiful, green eyes sparkled in the light of the stars.
"Can't sleep either?"
Her question made me jump.
"Nah," I flopped back on to my pillow, "didn't know you knew I was lookin' at you"
She gave a weak smile and went grim again.
"How long you been up?"
"Hour maybe, just lookin' at the stars"
It was slightly chilly since fall was starting in Riverview. I looked over at her curled up in a ball with a blanket wrapped around her. I pushed my blankets off and got up.
"What are you doing?" Casey asked as she looked at me.
I could tell she had been crying from her puffy red eyes. She need someone to comfort her, so I climbed on to her bed and just held her. We laid down and she cried until we passed out.
*beep beep beep*
The alarm was going off. It was 6:00 in the morning. Everything was still fuzzy as I opened my eyes, taking in the sweet smell of a cross between vanilla and peaches. The sweet scent of Casey. We both fully woke up and just laid in bed still holding each other for a few more minutes, I could have stayed there forever just enjoying being with Casey.
We finally got up and started getting ready, showering, getting dressed, etc. We went down stairs to see mom had made breakfast, chocolate chip pancakes.
"Morning, girls" mother spoke out soft and gentle.
"Good morning, momma" I said and gave her a kiss on the cheek.
She smiled as Casey and I sat down to eat.
Once we finished I grabbed my keys and went outside to warm my car up, while inside Casey was getting coffee ready for us. I went back inside and took a deep breath. Everything seemed to change with dads death. It just seemed everyone was quiet today.
Casey handed me my cup, we grabbed our bags, and said our goodbyes to mom. We climbed in the car and I heard Casey mutter something to herself, I couldn't quite make out the words though.
"You know they're gonna be sympathetic to us all day today, right?" Casey spoke out as we pulled out to the road.
"Yeah.. we'll just have to joke around a bit to break the sympathetic wall." I gave her a sad smile.
Casey shrugged and looked out the window. I could tell she was still upset. I turned.
"Grace? What are you doing schools down the other road." She looked at me confused.
I said nothing to her.
We pulled up to The Donut House. Casey looked at me and smiled. She loved donuts. They were her comfort food.
"Are you for real?" She chuckled
"Yes ma'am, you need donuts. I can't have my Casey upset on our first day back." I said as I turned off the car and opened my door.
We went inside and each got a donut. I got Boston Creme and Casey got a Cheesecake Filled. After we drank our coffee and ate our donuts we got back in the car and headed to school. We had plenty of time before school started when we got there. We headed to our usual spot to find the usual suspects there.
"Casey! Grace!" Called out the red haired boy to us when we walked up.
"Hey Cole" I said and waved.
"You guys are late." The short grey haired girl with glasses spoke.
"Hush, Mandi!" The rebellious red and black haired girl said placing her arms on the shorter ones head.
Mandi ducked away from her arms, "stop using me as an arm rest!"
We all laughed, making Mandi's face heat up with anger. Sure she was loud and angry, but she was small and we know she's really a sweetheart inside.
"Alright, alright. What are your guys classes?" The tall girl with the purple and white streak hair, and the blue and green eyes.
"French, Calculus, Biology, ELA, lunch, History, Shop" Casey smiled after she spoke.
I told them I had ELA, History, Biology, Calculus, lunch, French, and then Shop.
We discussed classes a bit more before the bell rang. I had ELA with Emily, History with Cole, Mandi, and Marina, Casey and I had Bio together, I had Calc with Destiny, French with Cole and Mandi, and we all had shop together.
When the bell rang we said our "see ya later's and Emily and I headed to ELA.~
