Alchemy, the one thing that our father loved more than us, or, according to Edward the only thing he loved. Alchemy has one basic law, the law of equivalent exchange. It says that to gain something, something of equal value must be lost. To me and my brothers, that is the worlds one, and only, truth.

“Ed I don't think this is a good idea.” Alphonse gripped my hand tighter as we watched our brother, Edward, draw the transmutation circle in chalk on the wooden floor in our fathers study.

“Relax Al, everything's going to be fine.” Ed was still drawing as he said this, I opened my mouth to say something, but closed it again. Neither of my brothers have heard my voice since our mother died.

“But Ed, human transmutation has never been done right. We don't know what could happen...” Al tensed up a little as Ed drew the final line and walked over to us, pocketing the chalk.

“Al I said relax, we can do this.”

“I... alright...” We each took our places around the circle, kneeling down next to it.

“Remember, think of mom.” In unison we clapped our hands together, I looked at Al and Ed, then slammed my hands down on the circle.

The room lit up, yellow everywhere, in the middle of the circle something was beginning to form. I screamed, it was a monster, it wasn't mom, it... “Ed! Sammy!” I looked at Al, he was being pulled by something into a portal, he was reaching out to Ed. I screamed again and ran across the middle of the circle, reaching out to him, I tripped and landed next to Ed, he was missing his left leg, there was blood everywhere.

“Al! AL NO!” I scrambled for his hand and I touched the tips of his fingers... then he was gone. My left arm was ripped from my body and I screamed in pain, Ed was drawing a seal on the inside of a suit of armor that had fallen over... in blood. “ED!” The black creatures ripped his right arm away from him and the statue came to life, and that's the last thing I remember. I passed out seconds later...

Four years later.

“Ed, you broke it again?” I sighed and walked over to him, his arm, well, isn't a human arm anymore, because of that day four years ago....

Four years earlier

After I passed out, I woke up in Winry's house, next to Ed on the bed in the guest room. Where my arm should have been was bandaged up, and where Ed's leg and arm should have been were too. The suit of armor was sitting in the corner. I got up and went over to it, placing my hand on the helmet. “What were you doing with this Ed?”

“Sammy?” I screamed, it was Al's voice. I jumped back away from the armor, the eye's lit up and it stood, looking at me. “Sammy it's me, Alphonse!” I screamed again, waking up Ed.

“No... you can't be.. he's...” I couldn't get out a full sentence, I was terrified at the moment, and unbalanced, since I had no left arm, it felt weird. “Al's... he's...”

“Right there in front of you Sammy.” I turned and looked at Ed. “I bound his soul to that suit of armor, I saved him.” I looked back at the armor, confused.

“What's my name then? If you're Al, tell me.”

“Samantha Lynn Elric, Sammy for short.” I looked back at Ed, and he nodded, smiling.

“Al... it's really you!” I tackled him, knocking him over. He hugged me, and I finally let myself cry. ..

Four years later.

“I'm sorry Sam I didn't mean to.” Ed stood there looking at me, guilty as usual. I drew a transmutation circle on the metal part of his shoulder and clapped, placing my hands on it. His arm repaired and he stretched it out experimentally. His arm was made of automail now, as was his leg. “How is it that yours never breaks?”
