Erin felt the rush of blood through her head, the sound slamming against her ear drums. Her eyes flew open and she immediately tried to sit up as air rushed into her lungs, pushing itself through her arms and legs and leaving her fingers tingling at the sensation. She felt a hand push against her shoulder and onto something soft beneath her, and then the rushing of blood stopped and she could hear the sounds in the rattling ambulance, several voices, one feminine and soothing, the other rough and concerned. And the siren. The wailing pierced her temples as the sound pushed itself into her head, and it wasn't until her vision cleared when she could focus on the voices instead of the siren.
"Erin, can you hear me, look at me." The female voice asked her. Erin blinked her eyes and the face of a female paramedic came into focus. She held up a small light and shined it into both of Erin's eyes before slipping an oxygen mask over her nose and mouth.
"Keep that there, okay. Hang tight, we'll be there in 5". It was then when Erin felt a hand squeeze her own and she turned her head in the slightly elevated stretcher to see Voight, concern in his eyes and a half smile, half grimace covering his other features.
"Hey kiddo, how you feeling?" He asked, his voice scratchy with emotion.
"Like crap" she replied through the mask, even the two words making her chest ache. She winced as the ambulance went over a bumb, for the first time noticing the red-stainined gauze taped to her chest and the constant throb radiating through her. "Which hospital?"
"Mercy General. The rest of the team is going to meet us there. He's dead Erin." Voight added in reply. Erin nodded and let her head sway back and forth with the movement of the vehicle, too exhausted to hold it in any direction. She didn't realize her eyes had slipped closed until she felt a hand shaking her sholder. She saw that the stretcher was now completely flat and the paramedic was pressing againist something and yelling into her radio. Voight looked on panickedly, pushing a small hand into his own, larger ones. It was then when she realized that the hand was hers and that the paramedic was trying to revive her.
"This is what it must feel like to die" she thought before the scene before her vanished and everything went black.
